Help!
Can anyone out there suggest why I am having to remove and re-install this modem every time I reboot my computer. It works fine when newly installed but crashes if the computer has been turned off and on again.

How do I know what driver to download? Windows Update says my system requires no new drivers.

If you know the name of your modem then just use that to search for new drivers... Use the altavista search engine www.altavista.com

If you dont know the name then take out the modem and look for a name and some numbers on it..perhaps it will have a name somewhere.

Try removing all the modem drivers from your system before installing any new modem drivers, you may have too many. Check in Device manager...usually theres only one modem driver (17 is far to many remove them all and try using one only).

I had a problem similar to this with my old modem. In the end I got bored of it and bought a decent external modem. I paid £65 to SR for the Diamond Supraexpress 56e and it's great. It's even faster than my old one. The fact that it's external gets rid of all those annoying problems. If you've got room on your desk, a spare 9 pin serial port and the cash, buy this modem. It's the bees knees.

Was this modem installed after ahving another internal/external modem fitted to the computer? If so, it could be installing the wrong drivers for all or part of the modem.

What I mean is, a hardware modem has two parts, one part is the serial adapter which is needed for the computer to see them modem, and the other part is the modem itself. If one of these is not installed properly, you would have a problem. The other is it could be conflicting with anither hardware device without windows realising it.

Check which IRQ the modem is using, and if it is sharing it with another device. If it is try to use your bios to manually set the modem/slot IRQ to a different setting, or change the slot it is in.

Thanks for your reply.

Device Manager says the modem is working correctly and no conflicts and lists 17 driver files including the 3 from the CD supplied with the modem.
