Once again Nintendo seem to be at the brink of all things wonderful, I'm only saying this because I love Nintendo, but it has to be said that Nintendo have gone all out with the GBA.

I played it for the first time last Saturday when my mate bought it round my house to boast, it feels so good in your hands as they begin to sweat with passion, the smooth screen oozes the details of the new advanced games and the colours are so pleasing to your eyes you'd rather play them than go outside into the warm sunshine.

The first thing my friend told me was that you only needed one game cartridge for some games to play 4 player! surely this was madness I replied, but he reasured me and showed me the box. This reminds me of some PC games that were even better to pay because you didn't have to buy the game to play it!

I had heard of 4 player games on the GB original but had never played them so I guessed they weren't poular, but since the meaning of the word N64 had grown from 'console' to 'goldeneye's multiplayer' Nintendo realised this was the way forward for today's market, obviously the right choice.

The GBA might be simular to the Neo Geo and the Sega Game Gear, but because of the sheer power put inside the tiny box, It's almost as powerful as the PSone!
The only let down in this idea is the game memory, not using CDs is a bit of a setback but almost impossible, maybe Nintendo is already thinking about this.

1.6 million Japanese people bought this console in the first 2 months, there has to be something special, and although it has backwards compatabilty meaning you can play all the old GB games with more colour than because, while battling your mates seems almost unreal.

One of the purposes of the GBA is to take it on trips and play it on the move, hence the name portable.

If the GBA were to have a backlight the system would have had to be bigger than it is now. The whole reason why the original Gameboy won the handheld console wars was because it was small and had a long battery life. People would be complaining just as much had a backlight been used in the GBA IMO.

It's not as simple as sticking a bulb into the system, it would cause too much glare and it would make the LCD invisible, much like a Gamegear on high contrast. There has to be a lighting system where it is sandwiched between the back of the display and it's components to make a constant dispersion. The system would need to be bigger because of overheating problems.

Even after this the GBA would cost £50-100 more and for the same price you could have bought the GBA you have now, a suitable exterior lighting device and, few games and save a a lot of money on batteries.

The reason why Castlevania was made dark is that the game was finished before they could see it running on the final hardware. It did not look as dark on the PC screen as it does on the GBA screen. If they had time to correct it they would have had to change every pixel to a lighter shade. I'm sure a few of the other 'dark' games have this problem too.

People rant on about this back light as if the GBA needs a power-station hooked up to accomodate it!

A Simple 5-10 watt bulb would make all the difference! Without draining too much power! Who plays on a console for more than 4 hours a day anyway?!

Not me!

A backlight would have answered many complaints but it would have also caused many as well. A backlight like a PDA has is not the answer because of the fading resolution , the battery life and the lost clarity.

There are many problems resulting from backlights like the Gameboy being more fragile, you would see faint vertical/ horizontal lines like the Atari lynx and of course the battery life. It would have also made the GBA about £50 more expensive because the display would have had to been altered/made differently.

I wouldn't call them marketing geniuses, since Sony sold many more playstations through advertising anywhere they could, but they also opened a skate park which was more than advertising.
A back lit screen could have answerd a lot of questions asked by people on this site, Nintendo don't only make very powerful consoles, they move technology forward, the introduce lots of excellent ideas into the gaming market and they sell a huge amount of them, the other companies follow suit and Nintendo moves on again.
It's not extrodinary to see these events happening, they're very clever people.
I'd like to see more RARE games appear on the console as I havn't seen many apart from diddy pilot, that doesn't look too good.

Nintendo are a marketing genius. Everything you said was all part of what Nintendo advertised in promoting the console. The fact is, is that Nintendo could have made the console much more powerful, included an economically viable backlight system and 'advanced' the handheld market further forward. This would have cost millions more but why when they didn't need to.

Nintendo are marketing geniuses, they have marketed the GBA as the most advanced system out there. Nintendo could have made the GBA as powerful as they wanted to and it wouldn't have made a difference. Nintendo made the R&D as cheap as they could and and they have made more money than if they made it more powerful.

They have also pre-sold Gamecube consoles by marketing the GBA in their specific way. In a press interview they said "you have the controller for the Gamecube you might as well have the console". This was picked up by many gaming sites and is even on the back of the US box of the GBA.

NINTENDO ARE GENIUSES.
