Now what makes a character likeable?
I'd say that it was their hair.
Your typical Japanese RPG, such as anything by Square, always involves characters with lots of big crazy colourful hair. And the games are better for it.
But what about Mario and Luigi? Hardly hair to write home about, is it? That's probably why they wear those hats. I doubt that the Super Mario Brothers would still be around today is we'd have seen Mario take his hat off as he does in Super Mario 64. Mind you, at least he isn't ginger. In fact, does any character in a game have ginger hair?
Lara Croft. She's another popular games character, and she too has hair. I doubt the games would have been as popular if she was bald.
Now think of games such as WWF, or ISS. These both have 'create a wrestler/player' options. Notice how many hair options there are? Countless amounts! More, in fact, than head shapes!
There's one hair style more distinctive than any other. The mullet. You may think that there are no mullets in gaming. Think again, there are hundreds! Simply pick up any official Ice Hockey game, and look at the players picks. Never has such a selection of bad hair-do's ever been seen elsewhere....
Although the Japanese mad-hair syndrome alarms me, I would much rather see a mullet anyday.
I think, taking Pat Sharp as an example, the mullet is an often misunderstood fashion statement.
More Mullets.
Monkeys with Mullets
