Right, I toddled along to the cinema this evening with one of my mates, to see Dracula 2001, knowing fine well that Wes Craven was the man putting his name behind the film. Hear the name Wes Craven these days and what do you think, here comes another scream, right? Well thats what I though anyway!! And boy was I wrong.
The film begins with dead people on a boat, right dead people at the beginning, thats an original Wes Craven sort of idea, but half way through the film, you begin to think, wait a minute there are some serious messages being thrown at me here, and to the people still paying attention some serious religious undertones!!
Right the story is about Dracula, shock, looking for a new soul to swap with his own. The man who had him imprisoned for over 100 years and trying to find a way to kill him used his blood to stay alive, but the silly git went and had a daughter after taking on some of his blood. His daughter was whisked away by her mother once she learned of the secret, as she is a devout Catholic and really annoyed at this. So once Dracula is on his latest rampage, the hunt is on to track him down, but the father is conviniently knocked off by one of his converted follower. This is when the story hits full swing, once this background story has been laid.
Mary, the daughter, and Simon, his emplyee who feels the old man had turned his waste of a life around, decide it is up to them to kill the beast, but how?? Well, they figure out that Dracula obviously didn't just appear out of nowhere, so try to figure out who would have a good reason to hate crucifixes and silver. He also leaves a message on a wall scrolled in Arabeic (or some ancient language like that) so they figure out he must be 2000 years old, roughly!! Right, can anyone out there with any hint of bible knowledge tell me who is about 2000 years old, hates silver and crucifixes?? Yep, you got it Judas Iscariot!! OK, so now we get it Dracula is Judas Iscariot right?? Well, didn't he hang himself??? Yep, but the rope broke just as he was about to die, and so walla, he just turned into Dracula.
This is where I want to ask if Patrick Lussier (the director) is a modern day genius or going a little loopy. What sort of man does it take to come up with something like that (I know it probably wasn't his idea and he never wrote the thing, but I can't find the writers name, so he is being blamed!!). I was sitting half way through the film thinking, "This is so wrong, you can't say things like that, even if it is just a film, should I just walk out in protest??". But I hung on to the end, and by this time I was engulfed in a frenzy of feelings, were those religious undertones really all that bad, to link Dracula to Judas Iscariot, bloody clever that and after all it was just a film. The rantings against Christ were a bit much, but the film would have been so empty without it, but then he was the Devil Incarnate so I suppose ranting against Christ was to be expected. But I still can't see through this cloud in my head, was this film a work of pure modern day genius, or was a shallow piece of work which doesn't deserve to be shown on cinema screens. There has never been a film which has made me think so deeply about any subject, never mind religion, is this another mark of genius on behalf of the director??
Someone please put me out of my misery, I can't seem to do this on my own. Is this film a modern day classic or is it just shallow??
This leads me to another rant which I am most deeply upset about, namely, advertising in films. The last two films I have seen have had heavy advertising for two massive International franchises, Evolution with Head and Shoulders and Dracula 2001 with Virgin Megastores. I suppose it is fitting to have the daughter of Dracula to work in a store called Virgin, and they may have been sued if they didn't use the proper franchised store, but this is something which needs to be nipped in the bud before the comercialised rubbish we see in all forms of entertainment at the moment wipes out true genius!!!
