...you make the best of what's still around. At least, that's what a famous band once sung, and it's the same with gaming.

The summer comes upon us not just with blazing sun but with a threat of less games and a lull before the days close in on us again. Every summer its the same. But perhaps we should take this time to reflect on our stockpile of games that we already own, or get familiar with some of the older games by buying back catalogue stuff instead of new releases.

Now the Playstation 2 was often moaned about for having a lack of interesting games, most of them playing like PSX games with fancy graphics. Recently, though, there has been a wide release of some nice games that have slowly crept in and made the PS2 worth buying. With everyone looking forward to titles like MGS2, perhaps it's time to take a breath and look at some of those other shiny boxes on the shelf instead. ZOE sold well for the MGS2 demo, but it has some nice gameplay itself and Tekken Tag will satisfy most of your fighting requirements when the days get too hot to wonder outside (we can only hope!)

The Dreamcast is a good example of a console with a brighter past than future, and there are some great games to be had, some at bargain prices too. If you haven't witness the fun of Jet Set Radio, MSR or Virtua Tennis yet then the summer is the perfect time to do this. Even if you have played these games, isn't it time you dusted them off and put those shiny discs back in your machine before the next batch of titles takes over all of your spare time.

The Nintendo 64 isn't quite dead and buried yet, either. Got one? Well, how long since you played it? I'm sure you've already forgotton how good the first 64 Zelda game was, perhaps a replay is in order. Rediscover the watery delights of Waverace when the hosepipe bans take effect, or perhaps a wonder around Mario's castle of delights is in order, remembering just how good it was to clock that giant munching monster once and for all. Diddy kong and Banjo are just crying out for another race after being left in the back of the cupboard for so long and Fox McCloud still needs your help, even after he's saved the world a couple of times.

Replay value seems all but forgotton in the days of rushed releases and with new games and systems hitting the shelves all the time, so take a deep breath and walk back down retro avenue, just a little, and let your older games know they haven't been entirely forgotton.

Sorry that was meant to read 128-bit.

I really hate it when people say that the PS2 is nothing much a tarted up PS1. So far, I agree that it hasn’t shown off what it is capable of, but has any console? Come on face it today’s consoles 126-bit consoles haven’t shown us anything apart from prettier graphics. It isn’t just the PS2, look at the Dreamcast. That is 128-bit and to be the gameplay isn’t that much better than the N64. Yes, the graphics look brilliant but graphics aren’t the only thing that makes a good game as we all know too well.

With gaming getting more and more liked by people, developers are having trouble keeping up with demand. When I saw demand I mean “trends” that are currently hot in the streets. Basically, developers want to make games that are seen as cool by people so that the game will be very popular and therefor hopefully making money.
I think that the quality of games are not as good as they can and should be. Today’s technology is very good indeed, and yet we are still given the same games, year in year out. As new games consoles are coming out very frequently and they are meant to be holding more and advanced technology. “Great!” we all think, “The games on the consoles will be much better now!” Is this the case though? I think not. Yes games are getting graphically better but I feel that is it. I don’t know why this is, but this is a sad reality and something that I feel needs to get corrected.

I don’t think that the situation will get any better for a while. Infact, I think that the quality of games and consoles will get worse before getting better. I was really getting reved up for the PS2 thinking that we were going to be treated with something magical, but this has still not comes true. I think the reason why I got so hyped off for it was because of the so-called Emotion Engine promising to capture real life moments in games. Yes, the grass moves in TTT but is that all we are being treated to? If so I am very disappointed.

Today’s games seem to have a rushed feel to it, and I think this is because if a company produces a shooter for example which done really well and was loved by all gaming people, then the next company will think “Oh, I’ll have some of that” and so the story goes on. The best games today have taken time, and time is the key to success.

I understand that people will get very bored waiting, and waiting for games to come up so yes you need to release games that maybe aren’t as great as they could be. That’s just tough luck though, as companies seem to think that the quicker titles come out the better. So, what we have here is a very awkward situation. Do we want very few games, but the few are quality or loads of games of a low quality? That’s a hard question and I think the best answer to that is to just balance them out. So you would have the quality games that take a long while to make, and games that are quickly made.

This is where the problems start because we don’t really want games that seem really rushed, neither do we want them to be easy to complete. If companies want to keep us happy and content they need to release very few crapy games. I don’t mind games that are just “okay” as long as they have a long lifespan and reasonably good gameplay.

This is where the next problem comes in. People are often put of with the N64 for not having enough variety of games. Have these people actually booked a night in with Zelda though? Have they spent hours of fun playing Mario64? No, the chances are they haven’t. Either way Nintendo are still loosing money. Deep down they know that if they spend a long time making a game, the fewer games they are going to have on show. So, what can we expect with the Gamecube then? Let’s just hope that Nintendo don’t think they need to rush titles because we don’t want rushed titles on our consoles. I don’t think they will think this because they know that they have had a big change and this change is going to affect how frequent games are going to come out. This is of course the switch between cartridge format to CD format. These are no normal CD’s though as they are actually Mini CD’s!

Nintendo fans can put their minds at rest because Gamecube games are instant loading! Yes, that’s right I have witnessed it for myself. Shigsy demonstrated this to everyone using the game Luigi’s Mansion. The game loaded up virtually instantly and I actually breathed a sigh of relief. Nintendo owners were luckily enough to have five years worth of games being instant loaded, and to me this game the N64 one up of the PS1. Everyone was expecting his or her dream to end with the Gamecube but it looks like Nintendo have surprised and pleased us yet again.

As the console world takes a breather we are left with some truly outstanding games to play with, just enough to keep us going until the Gamecube and Microsoft’s X-Box comes out onto the scene.

It's great that my N64 is dead. Now I'll be able to pick up a load of cheap classics.

That's what I love about Crazy Taxi. As it's unstructured and just plain fun, I keep going back to it.

I recently sold all by 15+ PSone games to but Star Fighter. I regret it, as I miss WipEout, Driver, GT2 and all my old buddies. I shamelessly discarded them for a glitter title. Never again.
