Codenamed Project Reality, the new console would use 64bit, 'Reality Immersion Technology'’. Nintendo insisted not only would this system be far superior to existing 16bit CD systems, such as Commodore's CDTV, NEC's TurboGrafx and Sega's Mega-CD.
From the start, one of the biggest problems confronting Nintendo was time. In the late Eighties, Nintendo had essentially owned the entire 8bit console market. But delays in launching the SNES (1990) had allowed Sega's Mega Drive (1989) to dominate the 16bit market in Europe and achieve rough parity in America. For N64, another huge gap loomed. Both the Atari Jaguar and 3DO would launch in late '93, the Sega Saturn and Sony PlayStation following in '94 and where was Nintendo?
The N64 controller was specially designed by Shigeru Miyamoto just like he did for the GameCube one, and he’s great innovation insured the N64 had the best analogue control around. The problems were that the N64 is badly flawed by Nintendo's demand for cart technology. For enthusiasts, it's the only machine designed for pure gameplay.
The problem with the cart system was that it had very limited space to fit the games. The many other PC games would never appear on the system. Nintendo, for their part, were reluctant to allow conversions anyway -- they wanted unique N64 games. Inevitably Squaresoft reacted angrily at this decision and decided to work with Sony this time on the namely Sony Playstation which Nintendo played a part in making the CD based console.
Nintendo’s Disk upgrade was canned for European release but they did released a RAM Upgrade that improved the N64’s performance overall.
Ultimately, the most important point about N64 is that it wasn't designed as the world's best console, but the world's best Nintendo console. N64 was created to play games created by the worlds biggest and most successful videogames company. It brought us games such as Zelda Ocarina of time, Goldeneye, Perfect Dark and Mario 64 all these managed to use the N64’s technical limits to the max and became my all time great games.
And Nintendo has to thank RARE for bringing top-notch games for whoever stays a Nintendo fan. Moreover, many of these games will rank as the best in the world even when the X-Box or even when MGS 2 is out.
As it turned out, Ultra 64 would never be available for any one's home. The originally Japanese-only moniker Nintendo 64 was now for worldwide. Only Nintendo's standards could save the industry...
What now for Nintendo?
The Gameboy Advance for one, was released today of course :) we are now be able to play SNES quality games but this time the mini console is more powerful and you can hope to see your old favourite’s returning in Gameboy style :) plus the GameCube released in Europe on Spring 2002 :( sadly well over the US and Japanese release, maybe it’s not the most powerful machine around unlike the PS2 or but will improve from the N64 drastically to make it the Best Nintendo console. Nintendo are taking a step up from Catridges and getting into DVD's. Not forgetting Sega who is filling the gap of games available which the N64 had. You’ve got to think realistic to say that there is no such thing as a console war; it’s more like a technical war.
We can’t go on talking about the processor in the GameCube when we have to look forward to Mario, Zelda and Metroid coming back.
FAST FORWARD.

The PS2 does not need more VRAM, no matter what anyone says. Sony have included a stupidly big BUS, negating the need for VRAM and large chaches. If Sony make it bigger, developers would take the easy option and make inferior games. Instead, they are forcing them down the correct route. Anyone who doesn't know what the buggery I'm talking about read

Does that make sense?? No, it doesn't really...hopefully Snipster will know what I mean.
