Oh .Dear. God.
The anime follows a typically lazy, pervert high school student Takeya, who (incidentally) works in an adult film store who "befriends" and looks after an alien much to his resentment and xenophobic mistrust of her. The Alien is one of the Dears who recently crash land on earth who have been accepted into human society. They're beautiful race who's relationship with people can be described as being slaves to their "master", their aim to satisfy their every whim and desire. Cue a romantic comedy that's filled with much misunderstanding as Ren attempts to "satisfy" Takeya whilst learning the customs of humans.
The title song is called "Love slave", the protagonist is a pervert, his badly dubbed and annoying friends are perverts, nude ladies everywhere, Takeya's teacher is a shameless exhibitionist who frequently strips off in front of everyone including her students, she has a passion for revealing clothes and even HAS HER OWN PORN SERIES. Jesus, the amount of sexual innuendo in Dears is just overflowing and it almost completely corrupts the story. In fact, it practically borders on Soft core porn. It makes me cringe and laugh in equal measure just watching it and I don't know whether that's a good thing or not. Hell, I was pretty embarrassed to watch it in my own room with the door closed let alone watching it in the living room with parents around. Luckily, the comedic value comes through from Ren's clueless attempts to learn and adopt living like a Human partly due to her "faulty" upbringing. Frequently at the expense of Takeya who suffers no end and that makes me happy to watch my fellow man suffer. That, and the art work does a decent job of heightening the funny parts.
Watching DearS makes me feel that it's a show of 2 halves. On one side we have a funny romantic comedy concerning Takedya's and Ren's life and on the other a serious story where the Dears authority attempt to recapture Ren. Although it's used as a convenient plot device of forwarding the story, it simply doesn't go anywhere most of the time and is generally pointless. If the Anime had additional episodes that completed the adaption of the entire Manga series, it might have been worthwhile. As it is, the whole thing feels half finished and it certainly hints that there was going to be a second season which, so far hasn't materialised. it uses the immature jokes way too many times. Perhaps it was catering for adolescents? in which case this makes me even more disappointed as they had the talent to make a slick and smart comedy rather than resort to that cheapness. The Dubb isn't the worst I've heard, but there is still hell of a lot of room for improvement. The voices of some characters makes them even more annoying and would be on the top of my hit list if I ran a secret society of assassins.
But Overall, if you look past the faults and be able to deal with the soft core porn factor of the anime, you may enjoy watching this. It was certainly a guilty pleasure to watch and I wouldn't mind watching the second series if it was ever made. But I couldn't really recommend it to anyone as it's not something you would watch with your parents around nor proudly hold up to represent the qualities of Anime.
