A love hate relationship
I'm divided on this show. Love Hina should have been an excellent anime series as the Manga wasn't bad. Yet, somewhere down the line the whole thing went bad, but not bad enough to be awful in fact , it's good. if you get what I mean.
The story itself seems like a good scenario for a comedy romance (or a hentai game). Keitaro having failed his recent attempt at enrolling into the prestigious Tokyo University, he is sent to work at his Granma's all female lodge called the Hinata apartments. Understandably the all female lodgers resent a male manager, especially the likes of the loveable loser Keitaro and they make his life hell. Keitaro juggles his time throughout the show running the hinata apartments and trying to get into Tokyo University to fulfil a childhood promise.
Right from the word go, it shows an uneven quality. The Dubb is the first thing that shows its decidedly mixed performance. A good example would be Mitsune who is voiced with a southern belle accent and despite somehow being an inappropriate voice to use, it actually works and suits the character. The other characters either fall into the same category or are competent, doing a good job of portraying the character. Other times its just downright annoying, Keitaro's voice constantly grating or whether Mokoto shouting rock splitting technique every time she uses it. Jesus enough already! it's like that pretentious giant douche Mighty Mouse shouting "Here i come to save the day!" as a battle cry. If you manage to ignore the more irritable moments with the dubb its not bad overall.
The show was entertaining with plenty of entertaining stories that are filled with comedy and action. Most of the trademark humour is captured using the effective artwork, which can't be faulted. The characters are interesting and have depth and in many ways are likeable and do help in keeping things going. But the shows schizophrenia takes hold yet again as some of the trademark wacky humour doesn't translate well. Ideas and plots feel completely out of place, inappropriate, decidedly unfunny and bloody crap. Mechs? Magic, ghosts and demons ? A secret race of turtles living underground the surrounding landscape of the Hinata apartments building a Mecha Turtle to take over the world? Are you kidding me? and that's all before we discuss the constant clichéd moments where keitaro gets a constant thrashing from Naru sending him flying over the cityscape.
So where does all this leave us? It's hard to say, perhaps it's just me, for every step forward anywhere, it takes a step back. Where there are excellent touches, jokes and ideas, there are times it falls flat on its face when it goes OTT. It's a shame that in my opinion Love Hina didn't translate completely onto the screen. It does deliver in many aspects, but it fails in equal measure in those same areas. So I guess a compromise, a decidedly average score for a decidedly mixed performance:
5/10
You may have more luck enjoying the anime then I did, so here's a link to where you can watch it:
