[The melancholy of Haruhi suzumyia season 2]

The betrayal of haruhi suzumiya more like.

You know that I'm a huge fan of Haruhi Suzumyia. So when season 2 came out I exploded like a powder keg in excitement expecting this one to be every bit as brilliant as the first, if not better. In fact I was so eager I decided to watch the subb rather than the dubb.

Consisting of 14 episodes, Kyoto animations decided to use Season 2 as filler for the stop gaps for season 1 rather than a continuation. so now the anime is finally officially in sync with the Manga. They've also changed the episodes so that it follows chronologically rather than randomly. To really get the most out of show, you need to be completely new to the series, unless you enjoy watching the first season repeats (like I do), you had to be patient and wait.

Things got off smoothly and first impressions of Season 2 were good, the new opening title was likeable. The accompanying song, Super Driver, was every bit as catchy and brilliant as the first seasons. Hardly surprising when it was from the singer Aya Hirano, who incidentally does the voice of Haruhi. The first episode had Kyon going back in time 3 years to help the younger Haruhi to break into her school at night and carry out her eccentric schemes. But things don't go properly to plan and leaves Kyon stranded in the past desperately try to find a way back to his original time period. There wasn't much of the trademark humour in that episode, but still a good episode and things could only get better right?

Alas, it was not meant to be, because of 2 words: Endless Eight.

The episode begins with the SOS Brigade summoned to the usual meeting place, when they arrive Haruhi announces her plan to cram the huge list of things she wanted to do in the last 2 weeks of summer. Much to the ire of Kyon who had neglected his Summer homework up to this point, he has no choice but to keep Haruhi happy. The 2 weeks become a blur of nonstop activities and the summer ends with Kyon not doing his homework. He turns in for the night and decides to worry about the consequences the next day.

But this is where the entire season 2 turns into car crash TV. The story goes that the last 2 weeks of summer repeats itself and the brigade members soon realise they're stuck inside an infinite time loop caused by Haruhi because she doesn't want the summer to end. This also gives Kyoto animation the excuse to repeat the episode EIGHT TIMES. Recycling the entire Episode for 8 bloody weeks! at first there's significant changes to the episode, but as it drags on it gets less and less until only insignificant changes are made and passed off as "new". The whole process is absolutely senseless, who would have thought that showing the same episode 8 times made good television? Maybe in their infinite wisdom they wanted viewers to experience a taste of how it felt to live through a repeat (after all, Nagato the only person who could recollect all the repeats, endured it 15,532 times). To be fair, I would have been ok watching 6 parts of the endless Eight episodes, but that still doesn't make good TV! To expect viewers to watch the same episode 8 times over a period of 8 weeks and brand them "new" episodes? that's insulting.

It's a welcome relief that the last 5 episodes (the sigh of Haruhi suzumyia) involves the SOS brigade making the nonsensical, yet hugely successful movie; the adventures of mikuru asahina, for the art/culture fest seen in the first season. As filming continues fiction and reality begins to blur once more from Haruhi's vision of the movie. It was good to see the humour from the show return after enduring endless eight, but the damage was done. They promised 14 new episodes, we barely got half that number. Its left a very deep scar on what could have been a perfect opportunity to elevate the series. If it weren't for the other episodes to keep it floating at mediocre, the season would have bombed. There's no other way to describe it, to have Kyoto Animation pull out the Endless Eight episodes was a cop out, a lazy horrible slur on the fans who made the show such a success.

If you're new to the show, I suggest you watch it as normal but skip massive chunks of the Endless Eight episodes (maybe parts 4-7). For those of you who want to just watch the second season and don't worry about subs, you can go online and watch it. Me? I'm going to pray and hope that the movie the vanishment of Haruhi suzumyia in spring 2010 (also rumoured to come out in feb 2010) will return the show to top form.
