[Nurse]The Doctor's ready you may come in now!
[Doctor] Ah spoonbeast! so nice to see you! Tell me how are you?
[Me]I....I am....in pain....
[Doctor]Now, now, there's no need for the drama, I know your problem. After all, I treat anime fans like yourself for many years now. Would telling the things that happen to me here make you feel better? once i-
[me](fudge-ed) you, this is about my problems, not yours. I paid to see you and get your help. Not the other way round you (silly sausage-ed)
[Doctor] (Sigh) fair enough, So tell me, what was it you saw this time that's made you feel so terrible?
[Me]Doki doki school hours.
[Doc]
[Me] I first got whiff of the anime when after thoroughly enjoying the school antics of Azumanga Daioh, I went looking for some similar slice of life, comedy. In high schools.
[Doc] Ah yes, I heard about this show, just like azumanga daioh it was a serialised comic before making it into an anime and the anime was produced by J.C. staff as well . With the same usual episodes regarding various aspects of Japanese school life (summer break, sports day, culture fest, etc). Am I right?
[me]Exactly. How could J.C. staff go wrong?, both successful serialised comics and both became anime. Little did i know that doki doki school hours was nothing but 20 episodes of crap. I was hoping it would get better, Based on the catchy theme song and opening title it showed promise. But as soon as I saw the first few minutes I started to get concerned. The artwork was terrible, flat, lacked shading, it looked basic something not from 2004. It's rare for me to comment on artwork when there's more to a show then just the visuals, but this was unacceptable.
[Doctor] Spoonbeast, when you first found the show you must have realised what it looked like?
[Me]Give me a break, I gave it the benefit of the doubt. After all, they must have copied the style of the manga and if it was like that, so be it. But when the artists became god damn lazy and decided that ALL characters would have green eyes you just can't ignore it!
[Doctor]Now they have been lazy (Jots notes), you mentioned the characters. (Looks through book) my, my! there's certainly a lot of them! surely I would expect some wacky and funny opportunities with so many of them!
[Me]EXACTLY! how could you go wrong with characters like a sexy lesbian school girl with the hots for the school teacher who is short clumsy woman?, a metro sexual cross-dressing boy, a gay guy who lusts for the dumb naive jock? Well doki doki school hours found a way...
[Doctor](sarcastically) Oh please do indulge me...
[Me] The simple fact of the matter is that there's too MANY characters!, How the hell am I suppose to keep track of TEN main characters? It's hard enough keep track of names especially when they're all Japanese. Perhaps its why I didn't find them is in any way memorable or particularly deep compared to Chiyo and her friends. This lot practically looked like they came from the same clone vat with slight variations thanks to their green eyes and uniforms. The show does a very poor attempt at presenting each one and it becomes an uphill struggle knowing who everyone was. But what really turns this bunch of unlikable tw*ts truly deserving of my wrath is the uninspiring voice acting. Jesus, virtually all the girls sound practically identical despite being voiced by different people! But the men go one better by sounding equally terrible and being annoying as well! But we haven't even penetrated the main core problem of this rancid crap of a show!
[Doctor]Please spoonbeast, please calm down, you're making my daughter cry.
[Me] As I was saying, the nail that seals this travesty was that I mostly didn't find it funny. The humour was nonexistent or shallow. Granted, the show may or may not have been targeting a younger audience and not towards angst teens, but look at Azumanga Daioh! That had plenty of situational humour in the show. It used excellent characters, voice acting, scripting and an amusing art style to achieve it. DDSH didn't and couldn't bring the jokes forward. Every attempt lame or forced and that didn't impress me at all. Frequently it just made me cringe or groan. Hell, apart from the intro and outro songs, the music was also generic trash perhaps matching the naffness of it all. It was a pale comparison next to AZ.
[Doctor] surely there was something you enjoyed of this show?
[me] Ok, I did find a few parts funny, but Ironically, the parts that did make me smile were the episodes that moved away from school life to surreal scenarios like the spin on the persecutions of manga/anime otakus. Perhaps I'm being slightly harsh on the anime, after all the manga predated Azumanga by 2 years and maybe the jokes weren't as funny, but it's still no excuse. In some ways, DDSH takes much from Azumanga but fails to do anything constructive with it. But that's little comfort for so many problems.
[Doctor] Well, based on your fanboy angst, here's the prescription: The melancholy of Haruhi suzumyia season 2. You loved haruhi and I'm sure she'll wash away all those bad memories of doki doki school hours. Remember, watch this once a week for 14 weeks and you'll be fine.
[Me] HARUHI SEASON 2! JESUS CHRIST! THIS IS WHAT I NEEDED! thanks doc, you saved me! now it's time for me to leave! Spoonbeast away!
[Doctor]thank god we placed the bin under that window or he could have seriously hurt himself. He really needs to see a real doctor. Normal people just aren't that retarded. Nurse, I'm taking my break now, I don't wish to be disturbed.

You can watch doki doki school hours here, but tbh the sound isn't in sync in some of these episodes.
