Its true, and nobody can deny it. When Sony first mentioned the PS2, everybody thought it would be outstanding - except a few die hard Sega and Nintendo fans. "50 times the graphical performance of the DC" said Sony, and everybody nodded and wanted one. But now its here. And what have we got? A system that doesn't even out perform the DC, DVD problems and its expensive - nearly twice the cost of the DC in Japan, but the Japanese still bought it - why? Because Sony marketed it so well and they liked the fact it could play DVDs and games.
And hearin lies the problem. Sony loses money when sells the PS2 - roughly £200 a PS2 as is the cost of the Emotion Engine. Like any hardware manufacturer it makes its money on the games it sells to offset expensive hardware. But despite selling 2million PS2 its only sold (about) 3million games. Thats just 1.5 games for every PS2 owner (on average of course) which means that many bought the PS2 just for the DVD playback. Not a lot of games sales is it? And certainly not enough to off set the cost of the hardware.

Dead or Alive 2 is one example of how the DC can perform just as well for half the cost. Although the playstation 1 seemed to have set the standards for the last generation of gaming consoles, this is only because it was the first on the market, before the N64 and sega, the same applies to the dreamcast, every one bought one when they came out and therefore leaves only a small space for the playstation 2 and the long awaited Nintendo Dolphin (what a crap name).
This all goes to show that you don't need to have the best hardware ever found, it just needs to be a step ahead from the last, and with all this new technology going around at the moment it seems as if you have to buy a new console or pc just to keep in touch with the computor world of technology!
