Time for a few people to go to their mailbag and send something along the lines of:
"Here's an idea:
When people are viewing the UK version of your site why not actually have the competitions and 'sweeps' they can see actually be available to UK residents?
Perhaps it's because I have a .com email address, perhaps it isn't. If it isn't then sort your site out.
Thankyou."
You might want to leave out the '.com' bit, anyway if you want to sort out some UK competitions then send them an email via their mailbag: http://uk.xbox360.ign.com/email.html
The last online competition I entered was offering 5 first prizes, I won (PS2 version of Phantasy Star Online plus the soundtrack to it on CD), but the site Editor did point out that they only had 4 entries.
IGN has a huge userbase, and their competitions probably have huge numbers of entries. If you hunt around a little and enter the more obscure competitions you'll probably find your win-rate increases considerably.
I used to comp full time a few years back and a couple of prizes a week was normal (not including my 33 GADs), and during the course of a year the best of the wins included a 2-week anywhere you want European Holiday from an airline, a new £2000 computer from a car leasing firm, a complete Christmas (hamper, booze, tree, decorations, pressies, the works) from Hasbro, a remote-controlled truck from Sony, and a pair of box tickets to a Twickenham international which I managed to sell for £250. (Rugby ain't my thing).
I even won a tin of horse cough medicine, but can't for the life of me remember why I entered that particular competition.
In short, if you like your freebies, start at theprizefinder.com and, if you want to comp seriously, build up a list of similar source websites and join a few forums where compers gather to share information (e.g. they swap ideas for tie-breakers, let you know what new comps have launched that others don't know about yet, even post answers to some of the questions that are posed by some competitions).
