Got it the other day and am loving it, first time half life player and all. I put the counter strike part on as well, whats it like playing online? Is there just games that I can jump into, or do I need to join a team or something?

Counter strike is definitely not comfortable for beginners.
The opposition is way too sharpened and they'll be trampling all over your thumbs and limbs, leaving you in a wobbly mess of a player.

Try team fortress first, easy to get into, fairly fun for a while and is a good introduction to the world of Half life multiplayer mods, later you could also try Day of Defeat which is my favourite HL mod. CS is a hard game to get into, and with many players up to professional standards, an unforgiving one too.
I was going to suggest playing TFC first aswell. I used to play that a lot before I discovered CS.
Team Fortress is the perfect game to try out first, no matter how bad you are, you can still get a good score.
