Bruce Willis is known for playing a hard hitting, rough around the edges but all in all good guy. Still playing a good hearted cop who will go above duty to save the human race, Bruce Willis puts in a solid performance in this pleasing futuristic film.
The nice thing about this film is that there is a small dose of action and a nice plot which ends up being deeper than expected with a couple of big twists. The film is set in the future, and the creation of robots that can be controlled by the human mind and act as them in the real world has taken over. Only a small group of humans still walk around the world and use their own bodies. The majority pay to have “surrogates”, which are robots custom designed and then used by the owner to complete everyday tasks. They go to work for you, drive to the shops, go clubbing. Everything you would do past sleeping, eating and going to the toilet a surrogate is used for. A nice little touch came early on in the film for me, when two surrogates are killed. This normally causes no issue as the robot shuts off before the user is hurt, but this deadly new weapon is able to kill the user and the surrogate. Meaning the whole point of using these machines and having crime and death plummet, very useless! When the robots are found burnt out they suspect nothing about the users, until they go find them in the apartments and dead. I found it highly amusing how one of the surrogates was a very attractive young female who had been in a club with a male, leaving and getting friendly. The female surrogate’s user was found to be a very over weight man wearing a vest and pants! Found this to be a nice addition.
Bruce Willis is then on the scene, looking very young but still like him in his surrogate. They investigate the murder and find the people responsible, but when he is attacked by the deadly new weapon he manages to log off just in time, leaving his surrogate in a bad way but himself ok. Learning how people in surrogates are no longer safe, he takes to the streets in his own body, something he has not done for a long time. The movie follows on to how the weapon was made, the purpose of it all and who is behind it. A few nice twists are in there to keep you guessing who is in charge of it all and the underlying plot. There is a small side story with Bruce and his wife, they lost their son before surrogates were about and since that have had little to no physical contact, only through surrogates. To which Bruce is not happy about and misses the woman he loves.
So a nice involved plot that will suck you right in, there is one chase scene where we see some guns fired and Bruce Willis in his surrogate chasing a bad person. We see that police surrogates are upgraded to be faster and stronger to protect others, all a really nice idea and great scene, but at the end of it you want to see more and kind of wish it had several more like that. It is over rather quick and then slips back to being more about the detective side of things. Which is not a bad thing but i did find the film went a bit slow at times and wanted things to hurry along. That is only a slight issue with for all other purposes a really good film.
Great acting from the cast and the twists were not obvious in my opinion, until a few minutes before it was revealed. A couple more action scenes and i think this film would have been one of my favourite of the summer. Not one i would watch again but well worth a rent to see how you enjoy it. For me it was intriguing and a very nice idea of how the future could shape up. With a solid plot and good twists.
A very watchable 8.5/10
