My box is surrounded in a translucent, white substance/material. It can't be wiped off with a tissue.

With the two LEDs on that small board, you could swap out colours to retain full functionality. In other words you could put blue as the standard colour and yellow as the warning light. When my warranty runs out (actually, I think it already has) then I might mod my Xbox.
