I got weak at the knees and trembled when I first saw the PS2.
Shortly after the Japanes release I spent £600 on an import and £70 each for Tekken and Ridge Racer......
I have not had a more disapointing day in my life EVER.
The controller is so unsensitive that you have to squeeze REALLY hard to go anywhere on Ridge Racer, I was at the doctors the next day with a strained thumb muscle! I had to rest it for two days!
Tekken Tag was not much better than Tekken 3 and the DVD playback was horrendous. I used the L1 and o method to play American DVDs and stuck in the Matrix.....
My LG player costing me £150 had better playback.
The moral of the story? You can buy a Dreamcast and a DVD player for £300 NOW, why wait to be disapointed in 6 months time for the same price?
I have sold my PS2 and bought a Dreamcast and I enjoy it more, if the Dreamcast was £300 and the PS2 was £150, now, I would still buy a Dreamcast......
Plus, Dead Or Alive 2 is twice as good graphics on the DC (I played my m8s import of the PS2) and the DC version was twice as smooth with double resolution.
Surely this has to say something???
Just my opinion

Sega have worked really hard with the DC to make it easy to program for. Sony haven't bothered and went overboard with the emotion engine thing.
Sony just forgot what made the PS so attractive to programmers and gamers - it was simple, powerful and made gaming cool.
The PS2 doesn't look right, it hasn't been thought out properly and its expensive compared to the DC.
Black, hard to program for and expensive. Blimey, that sounds like the Saturn!!
Whats more disappointing is, all the people who are waiting for it (and ignoring the DC in the meantime) are missing out on some great games. And the PS2 is till going to sell millions - there's no justice! Role on the Dolphin...
