When you first start the game, you choose a name, sex and outfit for your detective, like in The Sims. You then get the menu page which has 3 things on it. Single player, multiplayer and The mystery creator.
The mystery creator is very much like the Sims where you can design a train a house, a boat or what ever place you want to have your murder to take place in (you have tables chairs etc, you know the things im on about!). Then you must make the people, give them a background and show their relationship to your other characters. Then just place the characters in your scenario and you have your own murder mystery in the waiting.
The Multiplayer is where you pit your detective skills against the rest of the world where every month a new mystery is created and downloadable as a patch to everyone with the game. You will have to be online to solve it and there is all the other detectives trying to solve the murder, and interview the suspects at the same time. You can talk to the other detectives and share information and even work together, if you think that a detective knows too much information then you can kill him and he is out of the investigation. How you do this I will explain in a minute.
Up for grabs in the multiplayer is a cool 1 million pounds (of electronic money that you can use in the game to buy better instruments and if you have loads of money then you can play the really hard scenarios.)
THe single player game is split into two halfs, the detective and the murderer.
The detective the the main game. The is a selection of randomly generated missions, ranging from easy to ultra hard. The way you tell how hard it is will be how much money you get if you solve the case. a couple of hundred pounds means it is really easy with a small map (which is in full 3D with lots of things that can be examined for clues) and only 2 or 3 suspects and should be solvable in 15-30 mins. 1 million pounds means it is incredibly hard with 50+ suspects and a massive map, this should take a couple of weeks to solve.
When you have chosen your case you now are in the map and you see your character in the 3rd person perspective. You then have to go around questioning suspects Using the 6 base question Who what when where why and how (eg click on what and then you could get '...do you think of...' then a list of people or you click '...time...' then you get possibilities like '...did you leave the building' or '...did you go to sleep' The idea of this is so that the game is not completely linear which all murder mystery games right now are. People have pretty simple personalities with a rating of 1-5 (1 being good and 5 being bad) for if they like a person or not. This is very important because if you ask someone if the commited the murder then they will take great offense to this and then walk off in a huff. You would probably lose 4 points for this so the only way to get the information is either to complement them +1 point of but them a present +2or3 points depending on how expensive it is.
This is where the money comes in because to accuse someone you must have the murder weapon or have an exact replica of the weapon. so if someone was shot you need to find out what the size of the bullet, what type of gun it was and the make of the gun, buy that gun, this can be done in a popup type screen like a database search rather than a shop you have to walk into.
once you have the weapon or a similar weapon you have to find the person and accuse then, the twist is that the murderer does not just have to kill the person dead at the beginning, they can kill again, so if you have a witness to the murder, you are going to have to get police security for the person, which will cost you big time. also if you accuse someone and are wrong or have the wrong weapon, and another character hears you then you will lose the case, so you have to be certain.
Now I know that not everyone likes murder mysteries so the other half of the single player game is where you can get a lot of money by an assignment where you have to kill somebody and get away with it. That is the key. The only way for you to get away with it is to either leave absolutely no clues (virtually impossible) or to get the police to accuse someone else.
The way to do this is not as simple as it might seem. when you murder someone you can use whatever is in the room from a sword to a gun to a book to a lamb chop, the list is endless. When you are going to kill someone you have to get your choice of weapon and then go into first person view where the mouse becomes your hands and you can swing the weapon around, to whack them on the back of the head. Or you might have to stab them or pull a trigger e.t.c
This in not mindless violence because now you have to get rid of evidence, this might mean washing blood off a candlestick. to do this simple thing, you have to get a bowl, fill it with water and then put the candlestick in the water. you might then have to clean up the floor and the body. this all takes time and you cannot be caught so it is very hard to get money in this way but it adds a whole new dimention to the game and creates good possibilities in the multiplayer.
The last thing about this game is speech. the only way I can get around the problem of speech in game from the millions of possible random characters is to have a voice warping system where it takes the wodes from sample voices and morphs then to make a new voice type for each person. This might not work, I'm not sure how they would do it!
Anyway the ket to this game is the randomness of the cases, this means that the longitivity of the game is endless with possibilities for loads of new features and files and well everything
thanks for reading, let me know what you think.
