Do you remember the first platform game? Most of you would of played it! You control a person jumping over barrels and climbing up ladders and for those who didn’t know the game is called Donkey Kong!

But what are the Platform games like today well now we Swim, shoot, get super powered, gain health, wander through 3D landscapes and even ride Rhinos. This is evidence of evolution games changing year after year till a game you played 10 years ago will be completely different to one from the same genre today! The changes are gradual and you only realize how much the genre has changed until you compare to one that came out years ago!

Even today right in front of are eyes games are evolving, in 5 years time they will not be a Platform game without a death match which companies, especially Rare are implementing into them! Nearly all shoot ‘em ups include Bots in death matches these days something which makers of the first Quake would never of considered. We are also witnessing an early stage of evolution in track editors, Revolt may not of been the first but grabbed the attention of developers, F-zero X has since implemented it in its add on, Tony Hawks 2 uses a skateboard park editor and Timesplitters with its death match editor. All of which will be common in 5 or 6 years time!

The evolution of games proves that the industry is constantly improving it self! The future of Gaming is very bright indeed!

Here’s to the future

Gaming has evolved, everything evolves. If evolution didn't occur we'd still be green primordial slime and computers, football, Blink 182 and roast chicken flavour crisps would never have existed!

Doom to Quake 3. Big jump I hear you say. Well not really there is a bigger jump out there. Whats that I hear you say well Wolfenstein 3d to Quake 3. Many people forget about old Wolfy when talking about first person shooters even though it was the mother of all of the games we play today. Which do you prefer killing monsters with a Rocket launcher or shooting a Nazi in the face with a shotgun......I know what I prefer.

Anyone can see that gaming has evolved considerably from its infancy in the likes of Pong and Donkey Kong. The advent of 3D games was perhaps the biggest event that has happened in recent years, the first 3D game I played was StuntCarRacer on the Amiga (and what a game). Today gamers are lucky to have games with great graphics and playability such as Quake III or Unreal. An advance from the early days no doubt however for me whats really holding back the industry is the peripherals that we use, after all these years were still playing games through a monitor and using a joystick or joypad.

Hopefully in the Future well have a holographic TV and optical sensors that pick up our movement and translate them into actions in a game. Nobody knows what the Future holds, but its sure to be exciting :-)

If someone had told me a decade ago that gaming was going to become so advanced that we would be controlling huge monsters as gods and they would have artificial emotions (Black & White), then I would have doubted the change or even chance. I knew back then of virtual reality, but never thought that this 3D environment would ever grace our home consoles and machines.

I first noticed this happening when I saw the end of the Super Nintendo era, I knew that gaming was becoming a massive market and wasn't aware at the time but Mario 64 was about to change gaming for ever after the release in 1996 (Japan).

Since then 3D worlds and surroundings have become the norm. in the release of any game. I can't actually mention a game that has had simple environments and a visual display that has been successful in the last few years? I know that Yoshi's Story tried to convert back to the good old Super Nintendo standards, but by its release the gaming public weren't interested because it looked old, although played great.

This 'evolution' is not slowing down, every month you will spot a difference in a newly released game that a predecessor would not have had, it may be moving a bit too fast for some peoples liking but I feel that companies will soon slow the speed of the change down with the new games. They will have to experiment with the new platforms, before they can get any game right, most newly released consoles will normally take a few months to get a decent role and release catalogue, and that is why its so important for every console to have a stunning release game, so people can then wait for 'great' games in the following months.

I have seen so much change in my time being a gamer that it has been like a very long and interesting novel, each month that rolls by introduces a new change in the industry, a new plan from a company; a suprise game; a different controller; a sequel; and a new chapter in the success of all the different companies. I feel that for any game to be great it has to blend the old market with the new, it has to be able to mould what made the Super Nintendo games great with what made the current games great, and if a company manages to complete this hard task, then and only then will we as the gamers see a game which would have evolved from the ones like Black & White and Metal Gear Solid.

Many games may not actually change that much from the current ones we have, some racing games won't change that much in the next five years, and I can see many people still playing GT3 and GT2 in the future. Only a few types and genres of games can change and evolve a lot more then what we are currently receiving, I see a great future in first person shooters, and I feel that if Nintendo can evolve the Pokemon games to something which we have never seen before then we will have a new breed of gaming.

Thats really what its all about though, isn't it? The future of gaming, the evolution of gaming in the next few years?

Thanks for reading
