But to be honest if the gameboy advance kicks behind like everone says it shall have no problem with rivials!!
Sega had a crack at it with the Game Gear, the hand held version of the Master System. It was more powerful than the Game boy, was colour (at this time, the Game Boy was not in colour) and the games looked much better than those of the Game Boy. But, it wasn't the graphics that mattered, it was the gameplay. All of the Gameboy games relied on them being fun and addictive because the limitations of the Gameboy meant that it couldn't really produce a realistic experience. Some of the Game Gear games were fun, but not fun enough. Sega pulled out the Game Gear because people were buying the Game Boy and not the Game Gear.
There was the Atari Lynx, but I didn't really see much of this. There was advertising campaigns, with ads on TV showing just what the Lynx could do. But it wasn't enough, and Atari was forced to pull out of the hand held market, because the Game Boy was just too popular to keep up with.
Ermmmm! Any more! Oh yes, the Neo Geo Pocket. SNK having a crack at Hand held stardom with their very own Neo Geo Pocket. This could have been a real success, what with all of those possible brilliant Neo Geo games that could have made an appearance. But, it had only been out over here for about a couple of monthes, before SNK stopped producing them (at least for over here anyway). Why? They couldn't compete with the Gameboy. All of those fancier graphics, couldn't match the addictive gameplay of the Gameboy games (not saying that Neo Geo games weren't fun).
Bottom line! Anybody who has tried to oppose Nintendo and the Gameboy have failed. Nintendo's Gameboy was just too popular, and is now the most successful console ever.
Will anybody try to oppose Nintendo? Would anybody want to oppose Nintendo is really the question we have to ask here. As I have already said, anybody who has tried, failed. So, will other companies have a crack. Most likely. I am pretty sure that Sony or Microsoft will have a crack at taking that hand held crown.
This brings up another question. Can they do it? Well, the odds are certainly against them, isn't it. I mean, Nintendos new hand held, the Gameboy Advance, has the success of the Gameboy behind it. And because it is backward compatible, you can also play all of those addictive and fun Gameboy games on it as well. It has a lot of strength, so it would take something really special to topple Nintendo in the hand held market.
One could say that the GBAdvance could have similar problems that the other rival hand held consoles faced. It will be more powerful, meaning that the games will be that little bit more realistic, and this could take away some of that fun. But, even if this does happen (as unlikely as it is), there are no rivals, no form of competition.
Nintendo have the hand held market in the hands, and it will probably be like this for a very long time to come!
Anyone seen the new wonderswan? It has games ranging from Final Fantasy to errr... other games.
But seriously, the fact it has backing from Square should be enough... but it isn't!
Also, there were rumours about a new NGCP advanced to rival the GBA... but now the SNK have closed down outside japan this may never happen...
BUT! SNK are in talks with Sony... so maybe sony will try to push SNKs new hardware, or even make their own!
Sonic
Mobile phones use up power much quicker than a Gameboy with the same amount of constant playing.
Anyway, that Wonderswan was announced to the world over a year ago and nothing's been said since!
The Game Boy's first rival was the Game Gear. But because it needed 6 batteries, it didn't do too well, even though it had a back light!
Nothing will beat Game Boy.
Well it failed miserably and within months it disappeared. I don't know why, it was the first handheld with an analogue controller but maybe there weren't enough people who wanted to make games for it.
I have also found a few other "rivals" that may come into market soon.
The first is the WonderSwan Color. It hasn't yet been made a likely UK release but if it comes out in Japan, it could do well.
The WonderSwan will have online capability and can be connected to the Playstation 2 or Dreamcast. The screen can be used vertically or horizontally. It also has a long battery life.
It is less powerful than the GameBoy Advance though.
Go to www.gameconsoles.com and search for it to see a pic.
The next "rival" is called the GamePark 32.
This handheld is also focusing on online capabilities. It has an embedded MP3 Player, an internet Browser and a media player. Therefore it is more of a multimedia System than a games console.
It has the largest screen of any handheld but may be let down by little software partners. It would also be quite expensive.

But after a long think, the real rivals are already in mass circulation and have the potential to completely wipe out the GameBoy Advance from the planet. Mobile Phones!
Games on these are simply going to get better and better.
The R380 is the latest in mobile gaming. It only has simple games like chess or TicTacToe but it seems to have potential.
Go to www.cellular.co.za/ericsson_r380.htm. for a picture.
But still with all of these possibilities, I don’t think the GameBoy Advance will have any trouble for a long time!
The GBA doesn't actually have any rivals.
There are a few more Game Boy Color games coming out after the Game Boy Advance's release so they will be competing against each other for a short while.
However no matter what is bought more, Nintendo will be making a profit.
