Some games are incredibly influential. Where would Nintendo be without Pokemon? Very possibly bankrupt. Sonic the Hedgehog is one of those games. Without Sonic, Sega would simply not exist today, the Mega Drive (Genesis) would have disappeared without trace, Nintendo wouldn't have created the SNES to compete with it, and basically, we would still be playing on the NES! Also, Sonic is still maybe my favourite ever game.
Sonic is a 2D, old school platformer in which you control a blue hedgehog that wears shoes + gloves. You collect rings, which act as a sort of shield (instead of dieing when hit, you lose the rings instead) and boost your score. Enemies roam the levels, most of which are disposed of by jumping on thier head. Your aim is to reach the far right side of the screen, where a boss awaits. Beat the boss, move on to the next level, and so on.
Assuming that you have never played Sonic (ie about 5 people), you'll be wondering what is so gosh-darn good about it. Well, theres an easy answer to that question - all of it. The bosses - various contraptions ranging from swinging ball + chains to fireball droppers - are well thought out, imaginative (if a little stereotypical), and almost rhythamical. The graphics are dated, but for thier time were reveloutionary. Music can start to grate, but the sound effects are cool (the 'bong' sound remains my fave sound in any game ever). The controls are so simple even a baby could play it, and the levels so well designed in terms of varity + length.
And the speed is awesome.
It truely is.
Cheese-o-meter rating - 5/5.
