Of course realism seems to have bee swept aside for a more arcade driven game (no pun intended) though the apparent fun of the game will come with the impressive damage model. Not only will your car be able to be busted up into tiny piece, but the environments you race around can also be interacted with. See a telegraph pole? Drive into it an knock it onto the track, cause a pile up with all the cars lagging behind. Barrels and tire barriers also no longer provide an indestructible obstacle, but will fly and bounce of objects and cars when hit, causing much mayhem to ensue.
There are even some intriguing, if slightly morbid mini-games (which should be a blast in the online aspects) the most interesting being the games where you have to launch your drive out of the windscreen of the car and into specific targets. There’s even a long jump type game where you much launch your driver as far as possible.
Sounds like a silly, but potential very enjoyable racing game, and with HL2 physics as well, a match made in heaven. Suddenly Burnout 3 has lost it’s appeal.

Toca for PS1 did it for me.
Going around the track backwards and smashing into cars.

I think that's what everyone did. I borrowed Toca once and me an my brother had a two player, not to race, but to take part in some race car jousting, see how much of a wreck we could leave our cars.
The damage model in Flatout is looking particularly impressive in terms of what can be damaged and crippled, add to that the environmental damage from track side obstacles and it looks as if we're in for quite a carnage filled racing game, my favourite kind.
I've looked around though and it looks as though Flatout won't be released until November, so that at least gives me chance to try out Burnout 3 in the meantime.
