With Mario taking a break from slaying Bowser and delving into summer sports, Mario Golf and Mario Tennis, I have to say I am surprised there was no Olympic cash in game. The Olympics is considered the creme de la creme of international sporting competitions and I would have thought our favourtie plumber might have had a go himself.

The 100m: You would have to believe that Toad would be favourite in this event. A basic all out button tap to the finish line.

The 110m Hurdles: Luigi and Mario to possibly rule this event. The hurdles would have to be the green pipes, and possibly those evil piranha plants could poke their heads out of the pipes now and then.

The Long Jump: Luigi or Peach have to be favourites with their long jumps. The judges on the side would have to be a mixture of toads, koopas and goombas.

The Hammer: The heavyweights should crush the opposition, quite literally! How far can you throw a Chain Chomp?

The Triple Jump: Goomba stomping here. Hop on one, skip on another and then jump as far into the pit as you can. This event will require precision to land on the goombas, and with Mario's experience of goomba stomping, surely he would be the favourite.

The High Jump: Remember the finish gate at the end of levels on Super Mario World. Well, you would have to jump over the line you had to try and jump into on Super Mario World, and wherever the line is at the time, it'd be moving see, would be your clearing distance. Either that or trying to jump as high onto the flag pole, you know the one at the end of levels on Super Mario Brothers.

Swimmming: You all have the fludd pack on your backs. Button bash to the finish but you can also use the fludd pack. But you can only use it for a certain amount of time. Do you put yourself into an early lead or leave it for the sprint finish?

Gymnastics: Put a routine together and impress the judges. I would ahev said Peach would be favourite but seeing Mario in Mario Sunshine, he sure has a few tricks up his sleeve!

These are some events. There is plenty of space for you to think of others and perhaps improve on the ideas I have posted here.

I've always thought it a bit of a shame that Nintendo haven't attempted some kind of Mario themed athletics/Olympics style game. We've sadly been lacking in this department (on a Nintendo console at least), the last decent one being the superb Track and Field game on the N64.

I think it has great potential, especially from a multiplayer party game point of view, and it's a big shame that Nintendo has never really shown any interest in making a game of this type. Maybe in 4 years time perhaps?
