I might have misunderstood you but, zip files are just 'containers' allowing you to compress a single file or a group of files.
The file(s) would need to be unzipped (extracted/uncompressed) to use them - they will just return to their normal file type.
i.e. a Word document will be '.doc' before and after zipping.
Remember since that Windows ME you can create or unzip/extract zip files in Windows without using a third-party application like Winzip. So nothing to install or buy.
Using the right-hand click menu in Windows you can 'Send To' 'Compressed (Zipped) Folder'. This will automatically create a zip folder with the files you selected.
Or you can create a new 'Compressed (Zipped) Folder' and drag all the files you want compressed.
Along with compressing files it also allows you to attach a group of files in a single email attachment which can be handy.
