However, if you didn't enjoy 'Scream' and would rather watch anything but sit through Buffy then this movie is a tediously feeble injection of 'life' into an already pretty limp genre. That genre being Teen horror.
Personally, I fall into the second category: i didn't really like the film. But... and here's the weird thing: I found it completely watchable.
This tends to happen quite a bit. I tend to buy dvds of more obscure or older films as i don't care much for the big bucks movies. But if a film like this on tv, i will nearly always watch it. Initially it's to see what all the fuss is about, but then i'll continue to watch it.
Using 'The Faculty' as an example... i would never buy this film (i borrowed it) but i can quite happily sit through it and even be 'entertained' by it - Yet... i still think it's rubbish. I mean.. whaa? I can only take a stab at the reason for this...
I think it's probably that films such as this are effectively entertaining (as they were intended to be) but that people such as myself don't see them as 'genuine'. By that i don't necessarily mean 'realistic' in the sense of the plot (I mean, The Faculty: '...mind controlling parasites rapidly begin spreading...' - not your average walk in the park, is it?) but more in the way everything and everyone is portrayed as perfect, and if they're not perfect, they will have undergone some lifestyle change before the end of the film. The way people talk/act in this sort of film (as will not have gone un-noticed, i know) is not how real people talk. I think that is the key to why the films are popular.. because depending on you, they either give you something that real life couldn't possibly contain, and thrill, excite you, etc... or they keep you entertained just because of how cheesy, fake/plastic, ridiculous and obviously money driven they are. BUT EITHER WAY THEY ENTERTAIN YOU. Even if the latter is not how they intended to entertain you, personally i still think it's pretty admirable.
Anyhoo, back to The Faculty...
The film centers around a high school where the students have noticed some very strange behaviour on the part of their teachers. After some cliched teenage snooping, they finally discover (shock! horror! etc) that their teacher's really are aliens. Alien parasites to be more precise, who have chosen their community in which to prey on innocent victims who will become their 'hosts'.
The film is very reliant on special effects. I'm not going to give away the goings on of the film for those of you yet to see it, but there are various scenes where computer generated graphics are used extensively. Personally i do not like computer generated graphics.. never have - they just look *too* smooth i think. But that's ok in a film like this because it all adds to the surreal realism and you'll either go 'wooaaaaahhhhhhhhh duuuuuuuuuuuuuuude' or you'll just laugh at the great big slimey slobbery thing.
I won't spoil the film by going through every twist in the plot, the best description i can give of this film is this: the illigitmate lovechild of the X-Files and The Breakfast Club.
When i started watching this film i expected to be on the edge of my seat... heading towards the door. But as i mentioned earlier the film is perfectly watchable, even if you hate it. All you budding psychologists out there.. go figure... i've had my say.
I think that if you're impressionable, watch this and attempt to see aliens.
I bet you do

I didn't like any of the characters, and wanted them to die, which kind of defeated the purpose of it!
It was directed by Robert Rodriguez, wasn't it?
I'd expectmore from him after Desperado and From Dusk Till Dawn.
