Piracy?

We all know it exists, and most if not all of us will have bought/seen or read about piracy in some form.

But just how serious a problem is it. I remember back in the day of the Commadore amiga you could borrow games of a friend and copy them onto a disk without any trouble at all. Then when the playstation came out at first there was no problems with piracy, but it didn't last long. Im sure you all know about the pen and blue-tac trick toallow you to change the disks at the logo. Then the chip was developed and people where getting there playstations chipped to allow them to play import games and also "pirate copies". Sony tried to prevent this by writting code on to the games but this code could be overwritten by adding patches to the disk when copying them. The N64 was "succesful" against piracy coz the cartridge that the game comes on is "pirate proof" and would cost alot to copy. It seems that all CD based machines are more at risk and with most future consoles comming out is the problem going to get worse? Now the PS2 is here and at the moment sony looks like its prevented the problem with piracy. You can have your PS2 chipped to play copies for your PS1 or multi region DVD's but nothing to allow you to play copies of PS2 games that are DVD based. But I think it's only a matter of time before some clever chap designs a way round this and starts the problem with piracy for sony all over again.
But is Piracy a big problem for Sony and others like microsoft/nintendo/sega? It costs them millions each year. Some people refuse to buy pirate copies (they say they don't play like the real thing, stop working after a while) but in truth they are an exact copy of the original so how can they be different? I guess it all comes down to the person, do you buy a pirate copy to save a pretty penny and break the law( doubt anyone will catch you though) or buy official games and remain loyal to the company and watch others buy a new game everyweek for £5 while you have to wait and save up for weeks to get 1. Its your choice, but piracy will always happen. It seems to be everywhere, just a part of everyday life.
Whether is to do with games or even music (whether its downloading it or copying a mates CD), and don't forget the PC ( Why pay £300 for software when you can get it for a tenner?) its always going to be there and there isn't really anyway of stopping it. Unless people admit that its wrong and we all stop doing it but i doubt that will happen.

Anyone else got their views on this?

Yes it hurts everyone by driving up
> game prices

not really! U know most of the profit for games goes to retailers... even if there was less piracy games would still cost the same amount becuase most people are willing to buy them for this much!

Actually, my idea of extra that u only get with the real game IS being used!!!! I just got the Daft Punk album. Inside is a credit card with a personal number on... this allows u to join the Daft Club website where u get loads of goodies. Ok, so I could easily share my number out, and this was not done to prevent piracy, but it could be adapted to!

NO! Games sellers take most of the profit... and they are sooo greedy!

2.Does piracy hurt

YES! Developers make next to nothing from games... the games sellers make all the money from them!

3.Should more be done to stop this?

YEs... but not just making it harder... maybe global releases,,, lowered sales prices etc
