Referees will be professional next season, the Football Association have confirmed. This is how it will be laid out:

The new scheme will make referees more accountable, and will also enable them to go full-time thanks to the financial incentives on offer, which could see the top officials earning as much as £60,000 a year.

The referees' National Review Board is to be replaced by a new stand-alone organisation, called the Professional Game Match Officials Board. The group will consist of the three governing bodies' chief executives and refereeing managers in addition to the FA's head of refereeing.

This restructuring is aimed at continuing to improve the overall standard of refereeing in the professional game and will see match officials categorised into two groups. The select group will officiate in the Premier League and other competitions and comprise of 24 referees and 48 assistant referees.

SO how much will they earn? Referees in this group will receive an annual retainer of £33,000 plus match fees of £900 for their commitment to training and development over several days each month in addition to their match commitments. Assistant referees in the select group will receive an allowance for their time dedicated to training. This group will be the responsibility of referees manager, Philip Don.

Part of the officials' training will see them spending time with various Premiership clubs, building up a rapport with them. Also as part of the initiative, the 24 referees in the select group will gather together every other Thursday. They will stay together and train and then each go their own separate way on the Saturday to the matches they are officiating at.

Outside of the Premiership, the national group will officiate in the Football League and other competitions, with 50 referees and 188 assistant referees.

Surely a move for the better.

Can we give them guns yet?

Come on people, you've all played M.U.D.S and Speedball, imagine the fun.

Would sort that Beckham Nonce out with his "Ooooh, punk!" mohawk.

I'm sorry Goatboy but, just as there is 'No crying in Baseball' there can be 'No guns in Football'. I know he's a fool but he can't be gunned down because of his hair. That's just how it is.

look you made me quote Tom Hanks from 'A league of their Own'.

Happy now????

But I can't be the only one that sees a vast improvement in the excitement of armed footie can I?

It would rock.
