Anyway, I was wandering around my local town, and walked into my local Blockbusters and had a gander at their DVDs. It was then I noticed how much of the space on a DVD is wasted. I mean, they are supposed to be about four times the size of a conventional CD, and can fit a helluva lot more on a DVD than on video. So why is it that most DVDs only have the film and a trailer, but nothing else.
You see DVDs that have tonnes of extras, such as deleted scenes, outtakes and 'Making of' documentaries, and then you notice DVDs with little in the way of extras. Why?
Why do think? Money! Lazyness! What!
Could be money in some cases, but the agian, I don't know much about the process of putting films on to DVDs, so I don't know the cost.
I personally think it's laziness. They just get the film, slap it on to a DVD, and release it, with maybe and added extra of a trailer. WOWEE! What's the point. Might as well by the video.
My point is: Most DVDs are a waste of money (not all, most). Yeah, they may make the quality of the picture better, but still, that doesn't make the pleasure of watching the film any better. DVDs have the extra space. It needs to be used.
The rights to provide a documentary on a film are different in different countries too, so where the US may get a making of, we have something else (or, yes, nothing at all) because they couldn't get the licence to provide it or pass the documentary through the BBFC in time to release the film. (another reason why we get films later than other countries, even in europe)
Next problem is the disc. A single sided, single layer disc holds a film and not much else. To increase the size, you have to use a better, and therefore more expensive, disc. The Stand (US edition) is on a dual sided, dual layer disc, which is fantastic, but it is nearly 7 hours long! So, yes there are money issues here as well.
Not only this, but rental versions of DVDs are sometimes lacking in the extras of their commercial counterparts, and this is a growing trend, so beware when buying ex-rental DVDs!
Maybe one day we'll get more on our DVDs for less, but until then we'll have to put up with the better quality picture and 5.1 sound they provide over VHS...
