Chapter 1: An Ordinary Life
Frank sat in his office. The fan above his head whirred into life again, blowing the cool air onto his thinning head. He needed to get out more, get more excitement, the years had just passed him by and he hadn’t really noticed until it was too late. Now he had one of those kind of lives that he swore he’d never end up in. 29 and already having nowhere to go, Frank looked at his reflection in the monitor and saw a fairly handsome man, with a few worry lines and a tired look staring back. The computer magazine job wasn’t half as exciting as he thought it would be.
The hand on the clock flipped over to the 5 and Frank got up, picked his coat up from the back of the chair, and headed out the door, pausing to say goodbye to the secretary and waving at his boss, who tried to chase after him with something in his hand, but saw the look on Frank’s face and gave up.
The streets were particularly busy this summer and Frank had to dodge several times as he walked towards his car on the other side of town. He’d heard about a shortcut from someone at work and thought this was a good time to take it. Dipping through a side alley he found himself in a dark street that looked like it didn’t fit with any of the shop fronts he usually walked past, it was unusually gothic, with tall winding buildings and a cool, dark feel to it. As he walked through the alley, he felt an eerie feeling as if someone was following him, so he walked faster. A can rolled past his feet and he looked down, almost as an automatic guesture, to watch it roll past. As he looked up again, about to set on his way, a strange man, with a long snakeskin coat and a hood that covered his face in shadow, stood in his way.
“You. Frank. You will not stand in the snakeman’s way.” Came a gruff voice from the shadowy face. Frank could swear he heard a hissing noise behind the voice.
“I…” began Frank, putting up his hands to show there was no hard feelings. The next moment he heard a loud bang and felt a force knock him backwards. Then the world went dark.

Chapter 2: Origins
The world spun into view and muffled voices began to clear as Frank regained consciousness.
“Hey, mate…” came the voice from above him. “You dropped your ring…”
Frank looked down at the gold ring that the man handed him before walking off. He remembered the strange man and the gunshot, then looked down at the red wound in his chest and felt a punishing pain swelling again. Trying not to pass out again, Frank put on the ring, it seemed the natural thing to do, as if he were playing out a part in some play with a pre-determined ending. He watched as the red wound started to shrink before the world went black again.
“Frank……Frank…..” Frank looked around and saw darkness everywhere. The voice persisted. “You are the one. The gods have chosen you. You will become the vessel..” he watched as a million images of planets swirled into view and stood there as they exploded into a million pieces. “You must help the spirit protect your world, your universe. There will be others who can help you in your quest, but be careful who you trust.” Frank listened as the voices faded away. “Remember Frank….with the ring comes responsibility, but the spirit will know what to do…”
Again Frank found himself in the alley. He found that the pain was gone, as was the wound. The ring was standing next to his hand and he stopped to put it in his pocket before heading back to his car as fast as he could.
He got to the car park just in time to witness three youths throwing an old lady against a wall. Without thinking Frank slipped the ring on his finger and felt the world slip away as he watched his body glow and transform…
“Ok lady, give us your money and we’ll let you go…” said the tallest youth, who looked to be the leader.
“Go away you horrible children…” said the lady in a frightened, stammering voice.
One of the other two kids snatched the lady’s small dog up by the collar. It yelped for air as the kid dangled it in front of the lady’s face.
“This is what happens when you don’t co-operate…” said the kid with the dog as he put up his other hand and twisted the dog’s neck. A short yelp eminated from the small dog before it fell silent and limp to the floor.
“Nooooo.” Cried the old lady as she saw the lifeless form of her precious pet in front of her.
The leader was about to speak again, now that they had broken the stupid old lady’s spirit, when he felt his feet lift from the floor.
“Don’t you think it’s past your bedtime, kid?” came the deep voice from behind him as he was twirled around to come face to face with his captor.
“Who….who are you?” the kid said, startled by the appearance of the man who was in front of him. He looked at the figure, over twice his size and with dark black eyes. His form wasn’t like any normal man’s, it was as if he had a snout and then he noticed the huge claw in front of him…
“I’m mongoose man, and you’re going to hand yourselves over to the police…” said the figure, slowly putting the boy down.
“o…o…ok….whatever you say sir….” Said the petrified boy as he and his friends rushed off to the nearest police station.
Mongoose man looked at the old lady, crying uncontrollably next to the still form of her dog. He stretched out a hand and a warm glowing light spread over the canine figure. To the ladies amazement, the dog got up and started licking her arm. She looked up, but the stranger was gone.

Epilogue
Frank opened the front door to his house.
“Hi love, I’m back..” he shouted.
“Hi there,” came his wife’s voice as she came around the corner from the lounge. “Had a good day?”
“Oh, just the same boring old routine.” Said Frank as he went to take off his coat. He felt the ring one more time and smiled to himself as he put it safely in the coat’s small zip pocket before hanging it up and gojng into the kitchen….
It's the Batman comic that was originally censored for having too much violence and 'adult' storylines, which caused this bright, day-glo Batman and Robin and their 'antics' with sound effects such as 'biff' and 'pow' This luckily stopped in the 70's and batman went back to being a brooding dark crusader, especially when the first Robin left and he found himself on his own again.
The late 70's Batman stories are a joy to read and the art is fantastic.
His true origins, as you can see here, are darker and he will return to form in another story!
Heh, it's odd that he has origins... I always just felt as if Mongoose Man was just a freak of nature. :0)
He's been more helpful in this little story than the rest of them put together though. :D
Don't blame me!
(Idiot)
I said...

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr...!
Game
(Just Kidding, I liked it!)
More adventures coming soon!
Mind you, if 20 years anyone said to you that a plumber would be a major gaming icon you'd have probably slapped them...
Nice one Pb!
