In December of this year, New Line Cinema will release the first installment of the highly anticipated Lord of the Rings Trilogy. With an all-star cast featuring names such as Ian McKellen, Sean Bean and Liv Tyler, director Pete Jackson is hoping to bring Tolkien's epic tale to the screen in all its glory.

However, the book has amassed generations of fans keen to see the facts of the story portrayed accurately, and Jackson's got a job on his hands in turning one of the most successful novels of all time into one of the most successful films. Transformation from novel to celluloid can prove harder than it seems (The Beach is a good example of how wrong it can go).

Any thoughts?

The books too long to get into a film, so they will do the usual 'cutting out loads of decent bits' and it will end up crap and the book is actually really decent...

They reduce them in size via digital effects.

I'm looking forward to this movie, although I fear the fanboys will cry out because of some reason.

They always do.

I'm not sure how it's going to work having humans play hobbits. What're they gonna do? Cut off Elijah Wood's legs?

Even if it captures at least some of the magic of the books, it will be something worth watching.

The bits that were shown at Cannes seemed to go down well.

True, but the trailer for the film looked promising.
If Jackson can make something entertaining yet still loyal to the novel, there may be some hope.

They are such huge stories that he doesn't stand a great deal of a chance in getting it right. Film cannot hold every word that is written in a book as a picture, so anyone who knows the book will most likely be disappointed.
