Clockwork Orange has a great concept but is about an hour over long. In fact, this is my biggest criticism of all his films I have seen. They are just too damn long.
The version of The Shining I watched recently was 1 hour 59 mins. There is also a version that is 2 hours 26 mins long, and I can tell you I would HATE to see it. The film just dragged on and on and on. It had it's moments (like those identical twins calling to Danny) but Stephen King can be thanked for that, not Kubrick.
Can anyone see the genius in his work? Or was he just an over-hyped (over-long!) director?
The directors that I would consider giving the 'genius' tag to are people like Harmony Korine (Kids, Gummo) and Todd Solondz (Happiness). They are true auteurs who have developed their own worlds. Are there any other genius directors I should know about out their?!!?
Probably his best was 2001: A Space Odyssey, which I see as the definitive sci-fi film. The concept behind it is so intriguing; exploring the unknown phenomena of Space and the evolution of man. Full Metal Jacket was another film I thought was very powerful in its brutal portrayal of the Viet Nam war. Spartacus was an epic piece of filmmaking back in 1960, and Dr. Strangelove was a great look at the (then) global fear of a nuclear war.
I think Kubrick made some great films, but was misunderstood for a lot of them.
Emotionally cold, distant movies that are about technology and tricks as opposed to story.
but that's just me.
For other directors that operate in a world of their own, I would recommend
The Coen Bros
The Wachowski Bros
David Lynch
Hal Hartley
