Ok, so SR don't sell the Xbox version at the moment (and why not?), but I found it in my local (games shop, not pub). So 'why not do a review?' I thought...

Wings of War is a First World War flying game in which you play a pilot for the allies fighting against zeppelins, enemy planes and tank columns as well as blowing up bridges and generally having a good time.

Don't ask me why I picked this up, but it was a budget game that caught my eye, so I borrowed it for the day (perks of having friends in the business) and it sucked me in. Yes, it is only a single player game, but while it would have been fantastic as a multi-player dog-fighter it still holds its own as a single-player experience.

There are around 12 missions of fantastic flying mayhem. Dodging flak and dive-bombing buildings and tanks is great fun, but it's the dog-fighting that really gets me going. At one point I was weaving in and out of about 12 planes, trying to shoot them all down. Your fellow pilots give you orders and help on your mission, but it's pretty easy to see what you have to do, despite the lengthy brief before each mission.

So, if you see this around cheap and flying WW1 planes is your bag, pick up a copy and give it a go. I just hope that they make a multi-player sequel, it would be sweet over Xbox Live.

I just didn't get any sense of speed or urgenc during the missions, unlike in Crimson Skies.

Lots of variety to the game though.

I reviewed it for Xboxrules.com

I gave it about 63%, if memory serves me correctly.

It is most definitely on my list. The one plane I dream of flying for real is the Sopwith Camel, sadly this is the closest I'm likely to ever come. Glad to know it is at least half decent as well.
