Many people sai it's the graphics, many people say it is the music, or the polygons per second and the graphics.
For example. Tony Hawks Pro Skater 2 is a skateboarding game, not a lot of people in England do skateboarding. So wh did it sell more that Fifa 2000, which is football, the biggest sport in England.
This often puzzeles me and does anyone know why this is???

So, what does make a good game?
There are two main things that make a good game; gameplay and graphics. Oh, there are others, such as music and sound effects, butreally, it's the gameplay and the graphics that most people take notice of.
1)Gameplay: Every great game needs to have great gameplay. It is often said that it is the gameplay that makes the game, and essentially, this is true. You can't have a good game without good gameplay. Imagine MGS with the gameplay of, say, Mission Impossible. Would it have been as great as it was? I'll leave that for you to think about.
a) Artificial Intelligence: This is needed to make the opponents think and do things in a realistic manner. This plays an important role in the gameplay.
b) Presentation: A game that has several modes and different options, can make the game last longer and adds to the playability of the game.
2)Graphics: The graphics aren't as important as the gameplay, but as The Game said in another post "Graphics are part of the gameplay". I believe this to be true. In most games, if the graphics are really stunning, then the gameplay can be portrayed brilliantly. Brilliant graphics can make characters movement more fluid etc. So, essentially, the graphics are part of the gameplay.
In a good game, both of the above need to be equally good.
This may not be the case for every game, such as football managment games, which don't really need graphics to make them great, but it does apply for most games.
Anyways I think that the reason THPS2 beat FIFA 2001s sales is the fact that people were looking for something new. I mean we have had many football games for lots of consoles but not really many Skateboarding games have we.
Tony Hawks is a game with spot on controls and is very original. The levels are nicely varied with different objectives on each level varied enough to keep you playing each of the levels. The controls have a big role in the games success I think as with bad controls the game could have been terribly frustrating. How fun can scraping yoursely off the floor after falling in the middle of a trick be.
I also feel that this is one of those " just one more go games". Just pictures it you come so close to getting the top score, but dont quite get it. You know you can beat it so you have another go. Oh soo close. You say "I'll just have one more go" and before you know it it is 12pm and you have thrashed all of your old scores. It is just so addictive. Also I think that the fact that no one really like falling over has helped the game. Normally it was people that liked the sport (took part in) who bought the game, but TH threw this theory out of he window. NOw a new batch of Skateboarders were coming through. The virtual ones. No longer did you have to risk falling over all you had to do was buy the game and press "start".
Now onto FIFA. No one has ever had the chance to play football have they EA. I mean the chance to play something you could just as easily do in the park on your console is breathtaking. It is just football. A sport many of us play anyway. Ok maybe we are better at the football games, but we can just as easily play it outside in real life. Skateboarding is different. It takes much longer to learn and can be quite exspensive buying all the equiptment. Even after a life time of practising I doubt you are going to be able to say that you can do a 900 Christ air, but I bet you would be able to say I can score a good goal.
This is what I think anyway. It will probably be ignored anyway.

Tony Hawkes however is a new style sports game which, like Pokémon, has become a craze!
(Yes I did compare Tony Hawkes to Pokémon!)
Graphics in a game are usually a major decider to whether people buy a game or not. Those who buy from shops usually look at the back of the box to see what the game looks like. If it looks good and they've got the cash, they'll buy it. If it looks old or pixelated, most people are gonna ignore it.
The Gameplay isn't usually a deciding factor because you don't always get to play the games til you've bought them. But you can rent games or play demos which doesn't cost that much.
Magazines play a huge role in todays sellings, and for the same reason, TV programs tend to influence buyers. They show you what the game looks like and tell you what they're about. They usually have ratings for the games saying the best and worst bits. And they tell the reader/viewer when they're out.
Sound-FX don't play much of a role in buying games (but there are exceptions). SFX are usually just part of the gameplay and you don't see them on the box, so it's just pot-luck if you get a game with good or bad SFX.
The genre/type of a game plays a huge role. Huge videogaming fans usually (but not always) prefer a certain type. They will almost always buy games of that type but will sometimes make exceptions.
Price plays the biggest role in buying games for myself. If the game is cheaper than all the rest (and if it's a PC game it's compatable with my computer) I'm more likely to buy it. There are exceptions, like the GBA and it's games which will all be new and full price, but I'm too excited not to get one.
Hypes/crazes: Pokémon, although the games are good (in my opinion) people have been put off them because loads of little kids are buying the toys and cards. However, some people see this as good and will buy the games anyway.
There are many deciding factors. Some like Control Style, I haven't mentioned because they are less important than most of the above. Everyone has their own reasons for buying games. So games designers should take this into concideration if they want to sell more copies of their games!
I think Tony Hawks made people do alot more skateboarding, before I never saw any, now I see loads!
