Well here’s another simulation game, (I’m sure we have seen these a few times before!)
Economic War has been produced by 'Monte Cristo' they have had a few games released, most of which people have never heard of, but I promise you there are a few that deserve some credit, I think that the best one was Airline Tycoon and I was hoping that this one would be nearly the same.
The Aim of this game is to be the prime minister or President of a country; you are in power so you can choose how much the public pay in tax and which countries to trade and become friends with.
To me this sounded like rather good game so I popped out the other day to buy Economic War, when I got home I was all ready to be stuck on the PC for hours playing on it like I did on Airline Tycoon (it was very addictive)
However to my surprise Economic War is nothing like Airline Tycoon or any other one of the games from Monte Cristo for that matter.
At the very start you get 6 missions to choose from, one is a arms race set after the 2nd World War were all the counties compete against one another for military power (sounds fun)
Another was an oil crisis, as you may have guessed you have to collect all the oil that you can before it all runs out.
So I choose a mission and then it asks which country you want to control out of; Germany, United Kingdom, USA, China, India, France, Japan and Sweden.
I picked the UK and went on, then it asks who you want to be your head of state and has a picture of the person, so I went through them all (around 20 altogether) some look like proper business men and woman but as you get further you can see people that look like that have just escaped from prison or just left the mafia.
Pick your Head of State and then the game begins and takes you to the capital of whichever country you have chosen, it looks alittle like Sim City 3000 at this point.
The city’s are only little and only have one or two landmarks in, then the rest of the country is fields.
You can click on the government building i.e. White House, 10 Downing Street and it will show you your MP’s, you can get advise off them however most of the time they tell you to get lost (hope Tony Blair doesn’t have that problem)
So you can then start to build things like Telephone and TV factories or Munitions factory’s, you place them wherever you want and click to build it.
However you have to make sure that you have a sufficient amount of factory’s to cater for the population and if you don’t! Well the public get annoyed and start to protest, the same happens if the tax’s go up to high (our public could do with taking a tip off this game)
If you don’t lower tax’s or don’t get some more factory’s then the public become violent and it turns into what happened in Oldham and Leeds with riots and fire’s.
After all that has passed then you have to start to get in contact with other countries because I can promise you that there will be a food shortage as most of the countries only have small area’s to put farms.
The best countries for food are China and India, its good to become friends with these, as they will then help you in your hour of need.
Each country has its own advantage, USA has lots of Coal and Missiles, the UK has.... Um... well the UK is a standard country and just has a small quantity of everything, China and India has lots of food and Japan has lots of TV’s, Mobile Phones, and Computers etc.
If a country is annoying you then it may be time to launch the nukes, you can declare war on whichever country you want and then you attack them with your missiles, but a tip is if you only have 10 missiles don’t declare war on a country with 20!!! (I learnt my lesson)
When you become very friendly with a country you can then begin talks on alliances and sharing technology and weapons.
So if you declare war make sure that they don’t have an alliance with someone else or you might just see your little country go up in flames.
If your alley’s country gets attacked you can then offer international aid just until the country gets back on its feet, there are many things you can offer the countries.
Spy’s play a part in this game also, you can send your spy’s into government buildings and get them to take pictures of a MP and then bring them back to your country, you can then use the pictures to frame other country’s.
Other things your spy’s can do are plant bombs or perhaps bribe someone in an opposite government, but sometimes your spy’s can be caught and it takes some doing to get them back.
As you progress you can begin research into better weapons or anything else you want to research that might just help your country.
Overall the game is quite good however I think alot more thought should have gone into it.
The graphics are just the usual Sim type graphics, they look cartoony like the other games Monte Cristo has released.
The interface is fairly easy to use and is like the one in Sim City 3000, the sound is ok, it could do with improving a little, but you would not know what type of sound to put on this game.
I suggest that you play the demo before buying it because it may not be everyone’s cup of tea.
I can say that its not the best management game I have seen but its far from the worst, I would give it a not to bad 6 out of 10.
