Ok, for those who haven't seen the main series: Law & Order deals with fictional crimes that are partly based on real-life cases and crimes. Usually an episode starts with cops dealing with a crime and finding who they think is the perpetrator then it moves on to the trial part.
Sounds pretty 'run of the mill' right?
Wrong.
The characters are very interesting and most of the time they manage to veer away from the cliches of other programs. There are usually numerous twists that 9/10 times you'd never guess in a million years. Also there's usually an interesting point of law or issue that's raised and once again these are usally rather fresh, original and really make you think whilst keep the proceedings believable.
Still I've barely scraped the surface with my attempted description, you'll just have to watch an episode to see what I mean. The amount of things they can cram into an episode never makes it boring and yet, with all that's going, it still feels very deep and intelligent for a television program.
I really wouldn't be surprised if university law courses use episodes to demonstrate points of law and get discussions going/essays written: it really is fascinating how good this program continuously is.
Now there's two off-shoots fro mthe main show Law & Order: Criminal Intent which deals with more serious and high profile crime and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit which deals with sexually based offences (and manages to have Ice-T in it and still be very credible indeed).
I've barely mentioned the show's sense of humour and many other things, but anyone looking for something more intellectual than CSI and a lot less cliched than most shows out there would do well to check an episode out.
There's a reason it's on about it's 16th season.
Amazing stuff.
Hallmark have 3 episodes on daily from 8pm-11pm Mon-Fri
Sky One are showing episodes on Wednesdays and Thursdays (repeated on Sky Two)
Channel Five show episodes on Tuesday nights and on the weekend.

> Special Victims Unit - a topic very close to home for me.

SVU seems to be the most personal. Obviously the title suggests that in one-way but I mean in the way that they explore and expose the main character's lives more than the other two series do.
Great show
