Some documents have to be legally destroyed after a certain amount of time or you can get into trouble for it.
For instance if you've got payroll records over 6 years old (copies of payslips for example) you're breaking the law and can be fined.

Yeah, depends on the document.
Most of the things I deal with need to be kept for 2 years. Some only 6 Months.

Payroll is 6 years for sure as you can query your salary 6 years from the date it's paid but others vary - it can depend on individual companies policy for one.
