I think it basically depends on how anal the courts (and 'Contensis Content Management System' [owners of www.gmail.co.uk]) are over this. They may be able to not let Google use the @gmail.com in the UK at all, hence not even re-direction.

But I can imagine google will forward on any correspondance to an old 'gmail' identifier to the new address should that happen

But existing users keep the old address, for now at least. I feel special, but not the way Crossbob is...
What if I'm a UK user who already has a Gmail address? Will that address ever change?
Unfortunately, we don't know. We would love to say that your address will always remain the same. But the trademark issue is still unsettled, and unfortunately, we cannot predict what the other party or the courts might do here
