One of the great things about the film was the attention to detail, anyone who's ever seen any boxing are likely to have seen Ali. If you've seen any of the 'classic' fights then you'll realise the painstaking nature of the detail, right down to sweat flying from Foreman's hair ("it's so good I put my name on it")
Will Smith is always a very watchable actor and he takes on a brilliant role here, capturing the enigmatic and extrovert nature of Ali perfectly. He started training a full year before the film just so he'd make his role perfect.
What makes this film more watchable than the other documentary-come-drama films is simply the level of detail. For me it's on a par with 'Dragon' (the story of Bruce Lee) as it contains some brilliant fight scenes that are choregraphed so they follow the original perfectly. It also contains some of Ali's background, events of the time and his relationship with revolutionaries such as Malcolm X. Even people like Don King are played by spitting-image actors.
My only fault with the whole film was that it stopped when Ali regained his title, although it's a dramatic moment it misses out what is sometimes called the greatest fight in history, the 'thriller in Manilla'.
So if anyone watched it last night or has seen it ... comments and for anyone that hasn't I'd recommend seeing it, even if you're not a boxing fan.
And I'll tell you this, it's worth it. I don't know whether the region 2 has all the features (well, one, a look back at Bel Air) but the episodes themselves are good value for money - containing about 12-16 hours worth.
Good buy.
On a different note, I saw the Fresh Prince boxset in HMV yesterday.
Anyway, I do remember it being a good film with Will Smith playing Ali in what I believe to be his best acting role to date. I was actually surprised at how well he did. An under-rated film in my opinion.
I like the way it went straight into the story instead of going through a pointless introduction.
Has anybody seen this film called King of the World? It's basically a Cassius Clay film and it was actually the first film I watched about Ali, I dont think it was very good, but it got the point across and whenever I watch Ali movies I always think of that movie.
Anyway, you probably dont need to know that. :D
Note : I'm not actually joking or being sarcastic
