My top 10 are:

Elite 1 & 2
Pirates!
Star Trek:Birth of the Federation
Heroes of Might and Magic Series (except 4)
Splinter Cell
Sim City (original)
Civilization Series
Total War Series
XCom UFO Enemy Unknown
XCom Terror From the Deep

Elite hasn't had much...competition with its genre. X-Beyond the Frontier, X2, Freelancer, all tried to beat the Elite Classic, but, IMHO, faild.

Pirates, best of its type and possibly the most affictive game Ive played. Similar games followed such as Cutthroats, Tougota, Port Royale, none of which captured the addictivness of Sid Meires classis Pirates!. Luckely for me, A remake is out next month. Woohoo!!

Star Trek: BOTF is, again, the best game of its genre. THE best Galactic Empire builder EWver. Similar games such as Imperium Galactica, Pax Imperia didnt get too good. Although Galactic Civilizations came Very close. Happily, Galactic Civ 2 will be out nest year. Hope its good.

Heroes of Might & Magic. Great game. Still trying to get hold of HoM&M 3 complete, but will soon. part 4 of the series isn't and never will be on my buy list, seeing that they aint sold anymore, except on ebay at +35% of original price.

Splinter Cell, perfect combination of Stealth and Tactics. Once you finish the game you can then try the add-on, Pandora Tommorrow. Unfortunately, once you complete and learn Splinter Cell, the add-on, Pandora Tommorrow will only last around 12 hours. Great Game though.

Sim City, the original, was a great game in its time. version 2, 3 and 4 are also great, but theres nothing like a little of the classic touch.

Civilization Series is the top empire builder around. No more need be said.

Total War, great for everyone who loves tactical war games. Cant wait for Rome Total War!

UFO Enemy Unknown is a fantastic classic game. Only Altar have dared try compete with it since, and failed with UFO Aftermath, but not by far. With luck, the sequal to UFO Aftermath, called UFO Aftershock, will make the grade.

UFO Terror from the deep is...not sure if it was a sequal to UFO Enemy Unknown, but a lot of the gamew followed the same line. A great follow-up to the original.

That was my top 10 and I hope you guys post yours and I hope it brings back some good memories :)

I bought ST BoTF years ago, but when I got XP, it wouldn't run. Until 1 hour ago, I found a patch which fixed it. Tommorrow I'll be on it :)

And if you never played Pirates!, read the review and look at the screenshots of the new version out next month. its here at special reserve and at http://gamesradar.msn.co.uk Sid Meier's Pirates
Looks Great

Wow, someone else who likes ST:BotF, which in my view was one hell of a empire building game. Complete freedom in what to do, and you could restrict yourself from taking over the galaxy and hence ending the game, while political positions changed all the time.

And UFO Enemy Unknown; I agree, one of my favourite games ever. Shame I haven't played Pirates before though, otherwise I'm sure I would have that up there.

I can't do a top 10 without plenty of thinking and deciding, so here are some definites in no particular order:

UFO Enemy Unknown
Ocarina of Time
ST: BotF
Settlers
F1 Grand Prix with F1GP-Ed
Deus Ex
