WE have seen a whole range of different ideas about console hand controlers over the years past. WE have had arcade sticks, hand controllers, joysticks etc. They have all had different designs and shapes to suit the gamers needs.

WE need a hand controller that fits around your hand very nicely with some easy to acces buttons and direction pad as well. In my opinion the Dreamcast controller is one of the most comy and fell good. But we still need pads to be tested a lot on a number of people to get the idea of how to fit everyone.

Back when the master system was around we saw rectangle pads has controllers. just a rectangular piece of plastic with 3 buttons and a direction button pad. Which was probably the most uncomofrtable thing I have ever held and after playing the dreamcast with it's ace controller you wonder if you're even holding the controler right.

Then when we had the mega drive and SNES there were some sight curves to fit around your hands which were actually pretty cool to hold and the mega drive had buttonS!! As the games were improving so were the peripherals and they really needed to back then.

Now we are on to the 32-bit console the playstation. This had a good controller but wasn't perfect. It was good and I had no complaints but it could of had work done to it just to make it that much smoother. It is a simple, basic pad and the same as the ps2's with some easy to reach again basic buttons which is very good.

WIth the nintendo 64 about we saw a totally new controller with three bits to hold on to which was strange when I first saw it. But these 3 "bits"? to hold on to were great and with the analogue stick in the centre it was more enjoyable and easier to control games.

The dreamcast pad looks horrible and without a view from behind you would think it is utter trifle to play with. But behind there is a very comfy place to put your fingers which fit in nicely which again easy to play with

Now in the next generation console wars we are starting to see very different controllers already. the gamecubes looks mutilated but I doubt nintendo will let us down. As bill gates announced the other day the Xbox pad has buttons in different places.

SO as the consoles improve and get different so do the perpherals and I can't wait to see them in ten years time....

cheers

Can someone please explain to me once and for all -

How is it possible to hurt/strain your palm/fingers/whatever with a dreamcast pad?

So many places I see references to 'dreamcast palm' or whatever they like to call it. I've never had any problems. Are these people holding it the right way up?

Hmmm, considering the circumstances I think that the prize should be something, y'know...

The GC controller is great I have held one. It was an advertisement type of thing and it had all of the wires encased and you could hold the pad and it had an advirtisement above it, with the new GC sign...and I thought that the N64 pad was comfy.

Although I have this PC controller which is extremely comfortable to hold and is shaped a bit like the PSX pad except instead of the 2 little sticks to grip with the top of your hand they are like the N64 pad ones except curvier. and there is a space for all of your fingers in the back and two triggers.

All the buttons are easy to reach. And it has Touch semsor so you turn the controller so does the vehicle or character on the screen. If you are wondering it is a WINGMAN EXTREME by logitech!

It all fits perfectly into my hand!

What about with PS2. Sony weren't very imaginitive seeing as they kept the console name the same and they didn't change the pad. They also didn't put 4 control ports on which is ridiculous. Four player is brilliant but to play it on a PS2 you have to dish out even more money for a multitap.
