I have a PS2, but to be honest I never really got on well with the controllers.
Does anyone know if there are any third party designs available with the analgogue stick and d-pad switched around?
And if anyone uses a pad like this, are they good quality / up to the job?
Cheers
The analogue stick has a much more direct feel to it and it somehow feels more precise. The position of it is much better than that of the PS2 pad as well.
Layout is a personal thing, but personally I find the DualShock layout to be the best. Maybe the analogue sticks are in a slightly unnatural position, but I can't say its ever been an issue for me and I find them very comfortable.
Next best thing was the Gamecube pad.
The original Xbox pad was just too big and clunky, and the hard plastic dome-shaped A, B, X and Y buttons killed my fingers, especially on games like Dead or Alive. The Controller-S is far, far better.
Having said all of that, the offset analogue sticks on these controllers , to me personally, feels even more unnatural because it's unbalanced. The DualShock at least has symmetry.

Build quality wise they're the best (just like he said...), but the layout and the analogue sticks aren't too good.

Erm. What?
I'm pretty sure they're seen to be crap.
I actually tried to reverse-wire a converter for a ps2 pad on gamecube, to use the cube pad on the ps2.
Needless to say it didn't work, but I had fun :^)
Cheers dude.
In terms of layout, personally I don't think it can be bettered either. You can buy many designs in 3rd-party pads, but I've not seen any that reverse the left analogue and D-pad to create the lop-sided Xbox-style layout you mean.
You could always buy an Xbox controller and get an adapter from Lik Sang, of course.
