This can't be good.

Every-so-often this computer freezes and emits this wonderful noise (see title) and the orange light on the front stops flashing an is constantly lit-up.

Anyway I've re-installed everything and killed off various nasty things that were lurking but could this be the hard drive? Or perhaps the fan is slowly giving up the ghost?

Answers on a postcard please.

The light on the front of your case indicates hard drive activity. If the light is coming on when the sound occurs, I can only really assume that it is your hard drive making the noise.

Sounds like you've got Mini Me in your PC... Evacuate the area.
