Tears ran down Garret’s face as he sat slumped in a heap on the floor, the stench of sewage water filled the air and blood was seeping from his leg and trickling down the drain. Garret was once a very respectable man in the community, a brilliant surgeon on his way up in the career ladder. He finished med school at the top of his class and in just 5 years was the chief resident of one of the busiest hospitals in London. He was proclaimed as an angel of the medical industry and had an outstanding record for keeping patients alive. Out of the 600 operations he had led only 34 fatalities had ever occurred whilst under the knife but like all of us one day Garret’s inevitable unlucky streak occurred…or rather started.

A mass casualty alert kept the hospital on edge in the early hours of the morning, apparently a coach had it’s left tires popped whilst taking a left turn and flipped leaving half the passengers looking like tomato purée on the road and the other half with critical wounds.

“What have we got?” asked Garret as the patient was pushed into the room,

“Serious neck injury and severe abdominal bleeding”

Garret ripped open the man’s shirt and a splash of blood showered his face.

“Ah crap, he must of busted an artery, get him into the OR, room 2 and have Pulaski deal with him”

Many hours passed and the OR had set a new record for the biggest amount of patients seen to in such a short space, Garret’s body was exhausted and only the adrenaline running through his veins was keeping him standing. The next patient busted through the doors, a 28 year old male with a crushed Femur and a fractured spine. Garret assessed the situation in a matter of seconds and readied himself for a leg amputation.

“Get this man some general anaesthetic, stat” demanded Garret his clothes bloodstained

“We’re all out I’ll go get some from the pharmacy”

“There’s no time, either we do this now or his bowels are going to get infected”

“I’ll give him a spinal then?”

“There is no time” Said Garret a stern tone, the nurse raised an eyebrow and backed away from the operating table,

“Well this is on you then, it’s inhumane to this to someone without any anaesthetic” stated the nurse.

Garret grabbed what seemingly looked like a saw and ripped into the flesh of the patient, he let off a scream of pain and convulsed, Garret then grabbed another saw as he cut through the bone, the patient continued to scream as blood splashed on the floor but Garret continued to slice through the flesh, finally he stitched the flap up and signalled to move the patient out of the room. Shortly after James Johnson the chief of medical staff burst though the door with scowl that could unnerve even the hardiest of people.

“Garret what the hell did you just do to that man?!” bellowed Johnson

“What I had to, he would of died if I hadn’t of taken his leg off” Garret said in a calm tone.

“I want you out of this OR room”

“My shift doesn’t end for 4 hours! You’ve been spending so much time walking around with a clipboard that you’ve forgot what you were taught about medicine”

Garret’s face was bright red with anger and looked at Johnson with a piercing stare, his fists clenched but Garret just pushed passed Johnson and slammed his way out of the OR violently brushing things of tables on his way.

6 months later Garret failed to show at court for charges of misconduct and latterly failed to turn up to his second hearing in which we was getting sued for £6,000,000 arguing if it was the right course of action to of amputated the leg without any form of anaesthetic.

Any comments on what you didn't or did like would be nice, even if you only read a paragraph.
