I think that if you take a cut of the pots as "the house", as it were, and if you charge people to come and play, and it's more than just you and some friends playing, then it IS illegal. You need a license to take a house cut from every game played, because that's what makes you a casino.

In many ways though it's a little borderline. To use an example; It would be like saying I'm setting up a website with information about porn and where to find it, but not actually showing it on the site.

It should be ok but you still have to negotiate the legalities of exactly how gambling is involved and whether you can use the site as an advertising bulletin.

Tricky situation actually, though, if you own the premisis and aren't gambling I think you're in the clear.

I dont mean you gamble using the site. The site would just be to spread the word of upcoming events etc.

It would have tournament dates, event location and time etc on there. Buy in amounts and prize money. Maybe even pics and write ups of the tournaments that have happened... get the idea?

So thats ok, right...

Now, setting up a website is illegal if you intend to use it for gambling, unless you get a license from somewhere.

I have no idea where to get license from, or how to inquire about it, but that's what you need. Never just set up a gambling site; whether you intend it for friends or not, as it is still viewable for the entire Globe.

Gerrod!

Its just I was thinking of setting up a website to organise weekly/fortnightly tournaments for people locally to join. Since my mates dont always have the money, be cool to play against other people and earn some extra cash.

;)

of course it's not illegal. Since when was gambling illegal in the UK? Never is the answer. It's just illegal in pubs and public places without a licence.

How on earth would they find out, anyway? Just don't play with £200 blinds, or anything, because you'll start losing friends pretty quick that way (because they'll rack up massive debts and go to prison).

Over the years I've become very jaded after many bad experiences with customer services, you have bucked the trend. Polite and efficient from the Freeola team, well done to all involved.
