Did someone pass a 'no fun' law or something? Well actually, that's not so far from the truth... in the UK anyway. The BBFC seem convinced that they are sheilding our pure white virgin souls from the manipulative and corruptive influences of the horror genre. I mean sure, we see poor efforts like 'Scream' filter through now and then... but personally i'm not all that impressed by teenie boppie poo-ie horror flicks like that one..
I find myself digging into the past quite a bit when it comes to searching for a good horror film... back to the late 70s or early 80s when there was a sudden surge in the genre. The best horror films seem to be of italian origin.. the italians have never been afraid of graphic imagery in their movies (see works of directors Fulci and Argento for evidence) but even the italians seems to have given up on the genre now.
It seems that censorship has driven the genre very much underground, so that nowadays the only decent zombie films are coming out of japan and other far away places (which makes it damn hard for those of us who don't know mothra or godzilla's current whereabouts and can't hitch a ride over to grab copies). Film makers seem scared to make real horror films because the film they make would most likely be banned or given such a high rating (in the us) that it would be blacklisted...
Some great horror films have come from Peter Jackson (Dead Alive, Braindead, etc).. but even he seems happier now doing films with Michael J. Fox...
Why is there this problem with this genre? Any gore ISNT REAL... this is clearly outlined by the fact that every single person who watches it knows they are going to see a *FILM*, not a live gore show.
Anyone else annoyed at the state of horror today? I can't be the only one...
A message to the would-be horror directors of today...
TAKE THE RISK, WE'RE DYING DOWN HERE.
Give it a few years and horror will be back in fashion again, with some good and some drek.
At the moment it's teen sex flicks (American Pie, Road Trip etc), then we'll be back to rom-coms, then sci-fi.
It's the same as music, trends and tastes.
I dont watch a lot of horror anymore, seen it and been there.
John Carpenter used to make fantastic horror movies but now?
Ghosts from Mars?
Hello?
The BBFC have actually relaxed their efforts quite a lot recently and it seems all the old geezers who ran it are going and being replaced by fresh blood (so to speak!) who seem a bit more liberal about things.
Of course, that will have little effect on the huge back-catalogue of old horror films that have been banned by them in the past, but they will filter through eventually.
