I double-click and nothing happens, I have to right-click and go to 'open with...'

It's only WMP that does this, if I set the association to another program it works fine.

Any ideas? (apart from not use WMP)

Thanks.

I just tried all of those things but it still doesn't work.
Damn Windows.

EDIT: The 'always use this program' checkbox doesn't stay checked and if I change the program and then change it back WMP is already highlighted - the box is greyed out awsell
Maybe that's just because it's the windows default

It has this at the end /prefetch:6 /Play "%L" Changing it didn't help.

additional:

if WMP is not showing up in the list then you will have to fine WMP by clicking advanced, then browse for the WMPlayer.exe file
you will have to use windows search 'WINDOWS' key + 'f' to find it

it also seems to need this bit on the end... ...Player.exe" /prefetch:1

what version of windows are u running??

XP - go to the control panel, open the 'folder options' folder

click the 'file types' tab

if it's MP3 files that are the problem then scroll down to MP3

it should be registered somewhere in the list.
it should also say what it is associated with (windows media player).
if not then click 'change', a list of other programs appear, click what you want to associate the file type with.

or: like the 'Opens with...' on an unrecognised file from the desktop (shift + right click will enable this option if the program default is not what you want to open the file with, you can then select a program form the list & click 'the always use this program' check box.

if you select windows media player from the list then it should work.
if more than one type of file is affected then do em all this way if the other way is not working...

You don't have to go through them again though. You will for the first time, but not susequent times. As long as you keep all your playable material in one folder.

Open Windows media player.

Then tools -> options -> file types -> select all -> ok

Then close and reopen by clicking.

Open WMP first and press Ctrl + O then find the file that way.
