I know the host selects them. Its just ashame you can't pick your own look. Especially when you play 16 player co-op.
I picked this up yesterday and played some multiplayer. Also done a couple of single player missions.
When I set up my profile, I was going through the appearance thing and noticed that it only lets you look at other costumes. Whats the point of having the section and not being able to select anything but the default appearance !? Would be better if players could select which ones they want to go into online co-op with.

I got it today, paid £20 for it from game. Got chaos theory for a tenner from some online site for £9.99 so im well chuffed.
I picked one off the internet last night for 14.99 brand new so i should be receiving it soon! *rubs hands together*
I'm sure you are, I haven't removed you..although once live lost a load of my players randomly which was annoying. I might be on tonight..got a PSP yesturday so I've been on that.
