Right, on my Computer's base it has 4 USB ports - two at the back and two at the front. Now, for some reason the two at the front dont work. I've tried plugging all sorts of devices in and the computer doesn't seem to recognise anything when they're plugged in.

I just want to know whether my USB ports are broken or whether I have to configure something on my computer so that the two front ports work?

Thanks.

Well if your devices are too advanced for the hardware, then they won't run anyway, but I'm sure at least one of your friends has a USB 1.0 or 1.1 device to shove in the socket, just to see?

Assume that the keyhole is unlocked, then it should be just a simple case of unscrewing any screws and sliding the case off. If it's locked though, then you'll either need the key, or break the lock.

To access the BIOS, press DEL whilst the computer is booting, before the Windows logo appears. If you're worried about missing the opportunity, simply hold DEL whilst starting the PC. It might beep at you for doing so, but ignoring it doesn't usually hurt it to make the BIOS appear.

tbh, I dont think I have any devices that are USB 1.1 so I cant check.

Okay, my computer base used to be used in a BT tower that my dad works at in London. So there it is second hand and could possibly have loose wires and stuff. Im tempted to open up the base, it has a key at the back of it, I assume I have to use this key to open it up. BTW, it's an IMB base NETVISTA and it says "Type - 6790-KTG".

Mozzy, I've had a similar problem in the past with front audio ports.

Try any of the following:
1. Plug something in which runs at the speed of the USB port (eg. 1.1 or 2.0) and tell us what happens. Do you even get a "Found new Hardware" balloon in the bottom right of the screen (Windows XP)?

2. Open the side of your computer and check the wires trailing from the front USB ports. It would be easier to help you with this point if you told us what motherboard you are using, because chances are that the wires are not connected properly. They must go in a particular order.

3. Check your BIOs settings. Some BIOS settings allow you to disable USB support.

Yes.

Unfortuantely not. He asked smv to make him red.

To hedfix - USB 2.0 devices still work with USB 1 because when I connect 2.0 devices to my back ports a little speech balloon comes up in the corner of my screen saying something like "this device will not perform fast" (something like that anyways).

To Damarus - Does that mean I have to open up my PC? If so, I might wait for my uncle to visit as im not too keen on opening my PC not knowing exactly what to do.

Btw headfix, why did you get banned?

The motherboard needs to support the front USB ports.

So...

1) The motherboard doesn't support them
2) The mobo supports them but they're not connected

Pehaps the ones at the front are USB 1 ports and your devices require USB 2 ports to function?
