But there are new pains in the ass.
First there's the ones that appear before your requested page, like the ones at Gamespot and IGN - with a 'Click to continue to...' message. I can't think of the name of this type of ad off the top of my head, but that doesn' make it any less annoying.
And then there's a phenomenon I've only come across in the last couple of weeks, but so far only at one site - torrentsearch.com.
This new pain in the butt is called a 'Layer Ad' - a DHTML layer (I think) which slides in over the content and actually takes up most of the window. Thing is, if there is other Java/Flash content, the layer sometimes actually goes behind this content, which can hide the 'close' button.
To think that fellow net users actually sit down and think this crap up! They're no better than the virus creators, in my opinion!
There should be some kind of global internet law against shoving adverts in your face like this. It's the equivalent of manacles appearing out of the arms of your chair, to make sure you sit through the adverts during your favourite TV programme. (Not counting BBC...)
Imagine the scenario, you're casually listening to your favourite band, whilst having a gander on the world wide web. You visit a site, it takes a while to load, then a really loud blippy bloppy mix of rubbish pours out of your speakers as some ass-face has decided to put background music on their site.
Background music = Should be banned.
Also, music on those banner ads, like the crazy frog ones. They stay at the top, you move your mouse upwards to reach your address barand it hovers over the ad. The crazy frog starts doing that crappy tune.
I hate it. I wish it would die.

Yeah, they're on Gamedose, and popup blockers don't block them. I especially hate the ones with sound, because they often make me jump.
