I dont know much about these, so can somebody explain how they work? When I was in France (on holiday) I tried to search for an access point in the hotel I was staying in using my Laptop. It picked up a signal and it was Orange (the mobile company) WiFi, I opened up IE and a page came up with a French Organge website asking me to log-in so that I could connect.

From what I could understand I had to give them my card details so they could charge me 10 Euros for 24 hours of internet, 20 for 48 hours and so on. I obviously didn't pay because at first I thought connecting through an access point was free and I didn't really need the internet.

So, after finding out I had to pay to connect I tried searching for the access point via my PSP. I found the orange network and added the connection to my PSP, but when I tried connecting it kept saying something like 'Failed to connect' so I gave up.

All I want to know is if I had to pay to connect or whether I could connect for free using a different company.

Thanks.

You have to pay in places like Hotel's etc. This has always been the case with wired connections, so they're not likely to change for Wireless.

There are various access points in places like McDonald's, Starbucks etc but I *think* you have to pay for those also. I may be wrong.

The only "free" Wireless hotspots that I know of are when you "accidentally" connect to a household connection. Having said that, someone was imprisoned last week for doing that, so I wouldn't bother...
