Anyway, England seem to be dicking them - to put it lightly. At the moment. When the inevitable collapse comes, the Aussies will bat England off the pitch. I mean, if England can rack up runs like this, the Aussies are sure to do the same. But times two.
That's two down. Next victim: Warne.
On the controversial Bell issue - we've got to accept that he's a specialist number four batsman and also, conveniently, a specialist fielder (which has actually helped us out with his close-range reflex stops).
From the selectors point of view, they must show the team that they have faith and give Bell the security he needs to perform. Additionally, we don't actually have many other options for fourth in the order - Collingwood, Thorpe, etc are all hotly suggested but I think that Robert Key would be the more likely substitute.
If Collingwood or Thorpe came in, we'd have three batsmen suited to the number five (or just a little higher) position (Flintoff and Pietersen being the other two). Perhaps the fact that we already have two players for that one position is unsettling Bell as he sees himself as the last of the enduring and solid openers.
It has been suggested that, in some perverse juggling of the order, we player neither Pietersen nor Flintoff at five, and hand that position to Bell, trying Pietersen at the more restrained and methodical number four. It is hoped that this takes some of the pressure off of Bell and gives him enough freedom to relax and spend some time at the crease.
With the series drawn level, the next test would probably the ideal time to try this.
